Speedometer cable
 

My speedometer on my 72 Cheyenne is about 10mph too fast and the cable is making alot of racket. I'd like to start repairing this situation by replacing the cable and seeing if that will calibrate the speedometer.

How do I determine the length to make an advance purchase (i.e. buy it before removing the old)? Should I just remove the old one and measure it?

Also, I have the Haynes repair manual, but there are no details about replacing the cable. Does anyone have instructions/advice?

It comes in a universal kit. You match it up to size of the old one & stake the new end on. It has intuctions with it. Check the odometer with the mile markers on the freeway. If it is off you will need to change the drive gear.

remove the cable from the housing clean it with solvent(laquer thinner) spray wd-40 down thru the cable housing go to auto parts store and get speedometer cable lube,it's a dry graphite lube that polishes the inside of the housing with useage reinstall original cable noise should be gone

Yep, what Cdowns said. Just unscrew the cable from the speedometer, unscrew it from the transmission, pull it all out, wipe it down with a rag, lube it with graphite, stick it all back in and you're done. It may read too fast still based on tire/wheel sizes not being original-otherwise you should be good to go!
