choke ???
 

How are the electronic carburetors wired? I have a 1406 Edelbrock and I have never had the choke hooked up. While I was under the hood to change the oil I noticed it wasn’t wired, so I said what the hell. I hooked up the + to what I thought was the stock choke wire. It had 12V on only with the key. I hooked up the neg to a good ground, but here is the problem. The choke light stays on all the time. What did I miss?

HOw does the choke work? I assume it has a thermal switch inside and it removes the ground once it reaches temp.

The choke is a spring that is warmed and it uncurls as it gets warmer. The choke wire on a lot of the mid eighties trucks ran through a switch on the driver's side of the motor and after it reached a good oil pressure the switch opens. That takes away the power to the choke. On a lot of aftermarket installs of the edelbrock carbs the choke is connected to a wire from the ignition circuit, so that it is on when the key is on. There is nothing inside the choke itself that opens the circuit after it gets warm. I think that you need to find the original choke wire and connect it to the carb, if you want the choke light to go out.

The choke light will also be on if the fuse is blown.

The choke light wouldn't come on at all if the I was using the wrong wire, right?
THe choke light goes out if I remove the ground wire, so it wouldn't be the fuse.
where is this oil switch you are talking about? On the side of the block near the oil filter? This is a new switch and I have good oil pressure on my stock gauge. Im at a loss guys. Has anyone had this problem. Now that I know there is a problem it bugs me. I need it fixed.

Go to your locasl dealer and get ahold of one of their shop manuals with a wiring diagram. It will give you the wire color and the pathway for that wire.

The choke/oil pressure switch is on the top of the engine behind the distributor on my '86. I don't know if yours is there or not.

My truck (84 GMC) and my son's truck (86 Chevy) both have an oil pressure sending unit on top of the engine and a switch on the driver's side of the block (right above the oil filter). The sending unit on top is for the oil pressure gauge only and the unit on the bottom of the block is a pressure switch on/off unit for the engine.

The wire for the electric choke feed is a Light blue wire that is connected to one side of the switch above the oil filter, along with a dark blue wire that is a feed to the instrument panel along with the tan wire that comes off of the oil pressure sending unit on the top of the engine. I have a factory shop manual for my truck and it shows these wires on a wiring diagram for a V-8 Engine "Light Duty Truck". The basic plan is to start the vehicle and the oil pressure closes the switch to start warming up the choke to open the butterflies inside the carb. This will stay powered up until you shut down the engine and power is removed. This is a way for GM to ensure that the motor started before opening the choke. Find that wire and connect it to your carb and it whould work, unless there is a problem with your circuitry.

I have put Edelbrock carbs on my Son's truck and Mine and they both work fine. I ran the ground wire for the choke to one of the screws that holds the bakalite cap in place on the choke heater, with no problem.

Mine are both on top of the engine on a brass "T" fitting.

yeah mine is a eldelbrocke carb (650 cfm thunder ) it has one green wire conected to the choke modual. mine works fine and the light only lights fr about 5 seconds
