I think that is the small step inserted in the side of the fleet side bed.
When the fleet sides started becomeing popular, some people complained that they couldn't stand on the truck side and work from there. GM's answer was this little $10 step. It came with a template too, this would show you where to cut the bedside to where it would support a man's weight and not flex.

That piece was actually started in the 50's IIRC, so it would be a very old P/N

I saw them alot in the early (59-66) Fleetsides.I put one in a`69 Dodge.Like many GM accessories, these were jobbed-out or sourced through outide mfgrs. and packaged as a GM part. Also available elsewhere, like Ventshades.

I have a set I got from ebay. Not sure on the actual year they came from, but the part # on these are 986838. These are called a side panel step unit.

Actually, GM can't take credit for coming up with these. Like many other "official" accessories such as Vent Shades, these were an existing product that GM chose to include in their accessory offerings. I bought mine from Dick Cepek in the '70s

Thank you for that , I know of those cast alum pockets from Hickey /GM BUT I was referring to Greg Youngman about GM # 994454 which is for the aux step that is bent tubular with expanded metal. Bolts to rocker box at door area for access into seating rather than access into box, Shown (illustrated) in 1973 dealer accessory brochure / not accessory catalog. I have one (yes only one) would like to purchase another or pair or whatever. thanks

You can't post a want to buy unless you are a Premium (paying) member. Anyway, Greg hasn't been on the board since 2-1-2006 so I doubt he is going to reply.
