The day of grease
5 Attachment(s)
Got into a lot more than I planned on today. I was running tests on the engine in the 69 and came up with some low compression Most cylinders were 95 and 2 were 110 and 1 was 115. Bottom end is still knocking and screaching. Jacob (Krazy_texan) and his seabee bud Justin came buy and decided to pitch in and help me pull the clip. Well, we after a meeting of the mindless we decided to also yank the engine. Within a couple hours, clip and engine are out of the grease encrusted truck.
Note to self. When you buy engine stand, you must also buy bolts to hook the engine with  Old fashion, on the floor, on wood blocks tear down. So far the teardown does not look to bad. The intake was not on tight, and I found a nail sticking out of a water jacket. No bent pushrods and they all seemed good. I have a feeling I'll see the real mess when I pull the botton end. I have found some bits of metal shavings in the engine valley. There is not much of a ridge on the cyclnder walls and no bad scoring on the driver's side. Not sure if I'll rebuild now or crate it. I'll have to see what the the other side and botton end is like. Here are some shots of the fun today. Thanks to my resident SeaBees. Could not have done it without you guys. |

I think someone put some carpenter ants in the motor, where else would a nail come from... ;) ;) |
Re: The day of grease
With all the other crap that was lying on there, I could believe there was carpenter ants in there :D.
Well I just made my decision...Found out the engine is not a 350 but a 305. Least according to the castings. Block ID GM 50L0 14010201 According to MORTEC says it is an 80-85 305 Head casting 14014416 again 305 w 1.84/1.5 valves 58CC heads. Time for a 350 crate I guess. Unless some one wants to through a big block my way :D |
Re: The day of grease

Re: The day of grease
Hmmm, a caddy 500 would fit right in there. ;)

Re: The day of grease
I have been tempted too Andy, I already have the late model mounts.

Re: The day of grease
Bill, I know a guy who has an early 70's 4 door caddy that is running.
I think it has a 472. He would probably sell it, but he would be selling from the perspective of selling a running driving car, not a "parts" car. |
Re: The day of grease
Thanks, but I think for now I'll be doing the 350. I want to get this up and running. I want to drive one, not just fab one. Hopefully I can get this back up running soon and finish the fab work on the 70 cab then swap things over.

Re: The day of grease
MAN, you guys tore into it, didn't ya? Yes, bolts would help with an engine stand.:)
|
Re: The day of grease
Bolts to an engine stand are kinda like all the little pipe fittings you need for an intake. I think they do that intentionally just to get you into the parts store again.

Re: The day of grease
Sounds like ya'll did some good today. 305 huh, figures.
BTW holler at me when you get a chance. Got a question for ya. |
