New Member from Arkansas

Hi, just wondering how many people used this site from Arkansas. Seems like there is a lot of good info out here and you guys have some fun too. I have had the old chevy truck bug for several years. I drive a 68 gold anniversary with 63,000 original miles (luckily I have a company car to keep the miles off my stuff during the week). I also have a 67 short fleet w/283 which needs restored, and I also have been working on building a 68 4WD short fleetside out of extra body parts putting it on a cut/boxed 3/4 ton 79 frame with 383/np205/turbo400. I have this stuff on the brain and I have lots of questions, so I'll start with just one: My 68 driver has a 355(about 325hp) with a 260 cam and a stock TH400 trans. The trans shifts very early. I'm in third gear by 25 mph unless I really stomp on it. It's almost like I don't have 1st gear. The rear end ratio is 3.73. The truck has plenty of power, but it won't take off hard because it shifts to 2nd as soon as it gets rolling. I've tried to adjust the modulator valve, but not much change. Any ideas?
By the way, my id suggests that I have a pro street 68 - not quite - just a disassembled truck waiting on expensive ideas. I'll have to wait til the kids get in school and the wife goes back to work to make any progress on it.
Thanks.

Welcome to the board from Sunny Southern California:cool:

I had the same problem when I first put a TH350 in my '63. Try recalibrating your transmission shift governor by changing weights and/or springs. B&M makes a governor recalibration kit that has an assortment of weights and springs that should be available from any speed shop. JEGS has it for $29.99. It's easy to do but may take a bit of trial and error depending on how far off you are.

Thanks guys. I'm not great with a computer and I'm trying to learn how to use this site better, but I'll try to get some pictures of my projects this weekend and post them.

Re: New Member from Arkansas

Finally took some pictures and figured out how to post them (if this works). The gold one is my 68 driver/wip gold anniversary, 63,000 miles, original paint, interior. I even have all the parts to make 100% original including the original spare with 1967 DOT #s that holds air, wheels, and hubcaps. This truck sat in a barn for about 15 years before I got it. Will be frame offed some day.
The red one is a 67 bone stock with 283/3sp. It runs and has very little rust except for the bed floor (got an extra bed). Found it a few miles from home and couldn't resist for the price.
Blue parts are 68 short/wide that will be going on a 79 3/4 ton 4wd frame that has been cut to correct wb. I'm not a fan of frame cutting, but the 3/4 ton frame is much thicker steel, and came with a parts truck that had a 400 trans, locking 14-bolt rear, dana front, and a 010/020 4-bolt main 350 that will be a 383 someday. If the frame gives, it will be somewhere other than the modified area. I plug-welded a reinforcing plate inside and boxed it for several inches on each side of the main weld. Anyway, here are my money pits!
