What starter to use?

I have a 3spd saginaw, (car tranny) in the truck now and it needs a new starter. Solenoid is on the way out. Now, how can I find a starter that'll fit, or know which solenoid to pickup?

The starter bolts to the flywheel cover, rather than the block. Through I think is 2-3bolts.

Anyone have a PN?

The starter bolts go through the flywheel cover plate and then into the belhousing. There should be three bolts; two from the front and one from the back. I don't have a part number, but a factory starter for a 66 C10 with a 327 and a standard trans should work fine. Hope that helps.

You can also just get a regular block-mount starter and swap the nose cone.

The probably charge handily for a complete b/h-mount starter nowadays.

The starter solenoids are the same for the GM manual trans & auto trans starters. But other than that, the 2 starters are two different breeds. 1 mounts directly to the behouing(manual trans), and the other mounts directly to the engine block (auto trans). You should be able to purchase either starter from your local auto parts store.

Before replacing the starter, I would put a draw on it at the local parts store to see how well it is working. Like how many amps it's pulling, how fast is it cranking, is it enguaging & disenguaging properly. Make sure you disconect the power at the battery first before atempting to removing the starter.
