68 c-10 2wd power steering question

My steering wheel has play in it from about 10 o' clock to 2 o' clock. when I turn the steering wheel everything is tight up to where the pitman arm connects to that hydrualic ram. I have a 67 parts truck that is the same way, does this mean i need a new pitman arm, or is something wrong with that ram? there is a shield in the way, so i can't see directly what's going on. like i said in the title, it's a 68 c10 2wd power steering. thanks

A little play where the pitman arm connects to the power steering control valve is normal. That movement operates the valve and sends fluid under pressure to the right or left side of the piston in the hydraulic cylinder. If all the other steering joints are tight, you probably have too much play in the steering box. See how much play you have at the steering wheel before the pitman arm starts to move.

Hey Bob, thanks for your reply. I went over and checked it out today. It doesn't have any slop before it gets to the control valve. And it's not alittle play, it's alot of play, but i'm not sure if that's the total problem because it actually looks like the frame flexes when i'm turning the wheel just in the slop.

So if it doesn't have any slop before it gets to the control valve does that mean I need to replace the control valve? This is a corvette control valve, and I can order this and it'll fit my 68?
