Hey can anyone shoot me a picture of how your rear bumper attaches? 55-59 stepsides. Thanks!!

I dont have any pictures but I can tell you there are 2 brackets which bolt to the frame under the bed and those bolt onto the bumper.

Yeah that is what we have but the holes dont line up very well. Does the frame sandwich between the two brackets?

Yes, on some bumpers one bracket goes inside the rail and one goes outside the rail. I have step bumpers on mine and they are not the same type and both mount differently.

Well after some serious cussing, kicking and screaming we got it on. Just to find out that either the frame is tweaked or less likley that there is a shock issue. The right rear shock is an overload shock and the left side isnt. Im HOPING that is why the right rear side is so much higher but I doubt it........

I don't know if it's ture or not on the 55 to 59 chevy's, but I know on the 73 to current truck they all sit lower on the drivers side. Even my 2004 did. You don't really notice it until it's been lowered. If everything check's out okay on your truck then you can have the passanger side spring dearched the amount needed to level it. I had to do this to my newer chevy truck.

i didnt wanna pay 99$ for some brackets so i attempted making some and got close, but notice it was still sitting on my tailgate in the picture :cool:

So did the brackets go on opposite sides of the frame (sandwich) or bothe on one side of the frame?

Not a step side but my fleetside mounts horizontally and has plenty of play in the stock holes for adjustment. When I got it someone has spot welded the two pieces for each side together.

sorry i don't have a better shot of the bumper bracket but if you look at the first picture you can see the end of the bracket mounted on the outside of the frame rail. and they curve down as they come out the back.. hope this helps

I made my own bumper brackets used 3/8 steel and a plasma cutter and a press. If I had to do it again I would buy repo. :ito:

Rude Dude, I'll meet ya half way.;)

I needed the brackets but didn't want to start from scratch. I ordered a set from LMC. When I installed the bumper with the new brackets, I was suprised how low and far back the bumper mounted. It may have been original but I had to have it closer to the bed.

I cut the brackets just a little too far, but since I was gonna have to weld-fill anyway, I put the bumper where I wanted it and bolted ends to the frame and to the bumper then began the fill.

After filling the gap.

Once the fill was done, 4 1/2" grinder cleaned the weld. Now the brackets look stock, but the bumper sits where I want it to be.

A little sheet metal work gave me a place for the license plate and filled the open area also.

New bumper so I taped it so I wouldn't scratch it while setting up the brackets.

whats the panel that closes the gap behind the bumper from ?

You can see the front of your bed sits diffrent form your cab line your bed is off on the frame check the frame mounts or add some rubber to adjust

The panel started out as a piece of 16 guage with a 90 degree angle. I took it from there and added stuff to make it follow the contour of the step in the bumper.

I do have a set of pictures of the process if anyone is interested, let me know and I'll post them.

Before I put the rear pan on, mine was mounted with the brackets in side the frame. Then I found out they were the wrong year brackets.

If I was going to put a rear one on again, I like the upside down look, so will need to make new ones anyhow.

just put on on my 57. NO it did not. both bracket pieces went together and on the outside of the frame.

another upside down one. Funny they all looked bowed, wonder if that was so you could put a trailer ball on it and it would even out.
