Getting readt to finish up welding and grinding my frame and I was wondering if any one has had there frame powder coated and how well does it hide and cover flap disk marks where I grinded down the welds?

i dunno if you wanna powdercoat the frame if a rock or something hits it (and the powdercoat was not prepared right) the paint will ship off

sure it looks great but for usability not so good

as for your question it depends how deep you go

I have to disagree with that comment... I have had tons of stuff powder coated, and I dont see a rock chipping it at all... I think a frame would last forever if coated, but I would guess somewhere around $1000 .. it cost me 350 to powdercoat an engine block and 250 to do a set of heads... so a frame will be some $$

wow that's steep,I can get a bare frame blasted/coated for $400 here.
I've seen some pieces powdercoated over grinding marks that show up pretty bad,but a flapwheel shouldn't leave very aggressive marks.I wouldn't worry about it myself,but you could go over it with a real fine grit wheel if you're concerned.

Thanks, I used 36grit flap disks and there are a little bit of low spots and thats what Im concerned with. I was wondering if powder coating filled small scratches like a filler primer would. If it does off to the coater it goes but if not her comes the K36 primer and let that sh*t fly.

It might fill very small scratches, but I would just get a fine grit disk and clean it up as well as you can. Fill in the low spots with weld's, then grind smooth. I can get a frame powdercoated for $200 here, and it's a nice thick and glossy coating. Not sure why Canadian Trucker would say dont powder coat, paint is where you get in trouble with chips, Im planning on powder coating the frame and suspension, & also want to try using bedliner on the bottom of cab, bed, lower fire wall since I won't be running inner fenders. Powder on a frame holds up pretty damn good. I had the frame done on my 83 and it held up to items dropped on it.

I had the frame and suspension sandblasted for $175 and powdercoated for $250. You do the math. I don't think it will fill 36 grit marks, but it will hide some stuff. If you want perfection, you will need to paint it.

NO, it won't hide the flap wheel lines. Powder coating does not have a high mil. build like paint unless you use one of the hammertone finishes.

I work in a custom fabrication shop and I deal with powder coating, plating and anodizing almost everyday, now like I said before, if the shop which is doing the powder coat does not degrease, clean flush , and then dry the parts properly first and the do the powder coating you can take the paint of with your finger...

my dads friend (also my friend) is a crazy car guy, he loves cars, I think even more than his wife, he gets all his frames, etc powder coated and he has had good ones and some real bad ones...

I am not saying don't do it... I am saying test them first, that's all

I had a frame power coated about 4 years ago. Still haven't put the cab on the frame. It has sat outside for that whole time. Hasn't faded , flaked or anything.
I used some kind of metal type body filler to smooth it out. The frame has been moved, dropped , slid, a tree fell on it! It isn't the same as being driven but it has help up to that.
I can't remember the name of the filler but the power coating has held to it like steel.
It's all really in how the metal is prepped, cleaned, sprayed and whether it is cooled down slowly.
Basically experienced person...........
usually around 400 around here, that includes everything.

My frame is powdercoated, as is 90% of my components on it.
Think of the coverage very similar to paint, alot of imperfections will still show up :cool:

Regarding durability, prep is key to any coating.
