Can you still ride in the back of a truck in your State?
I remember going to concerts, drive-ins or anywhere in the back of a truck when I was young. There'd be a dozen of us boozin it up back there. But kids can't do that anymore in CA. (Maybe that's one reason SUV's are so popular).
Just wondering which states still allow this? (the riding in the back, not the boozin it up part) |
Re: Can you still ride in the back of a truck in your State?
ohio, you can ride in the back of a truck, as long as you are 16, sitting on the floor at the front of the bed, with the tail gate up, and the truck is doing 25 MPH or less.
That info may be out dated, but that's what it was about 10 years ago. |

In Kansas you have to be in a properly mounted seat and be wearing a seat belt. Last pickup I saw with a seat in the back was a Subaru.

In Tennessee children 6 and under may sit in the back of a truck. I believe there's exemptions for parades and stuff.

Re: Can you still ride in the back of a truck in your State?
I hope NOT.
But I believe it is like Longhornman said for Ohio, over 16. But it is definitely NOT inforced. |

I live in Northern OKLAHOMA but I rarely see people ride in the back anymore. Maybe they still can. I'll ask my gf's brother who's a local p.officer. I remember in elementary school loading up and going to HS football games in the back of trucks. Yes, OKLAHOMA is much cheaper to live in than Kalif most people who come and visit like it. YOu can do a lot of things here. I hear about small towns where the local police do stuff like "drive your car as fast as you can and I'll radar you for fun." may seem crazy but it's true. Just have your safety chains around your trailer when you're pulling your alfa bales. |
Re: Can you still ride in the back of a truck in your State?
In Georgia I think the only requirement is that those in the bed have to be 18 or older. Not sure how accurate that is, but I know when I was riding in my friends truck we stopped somewhere and a cop pulled up as we got out and said if we weren't 18 we needed to get in the cab, didn't say anything past that.

In California teenagers don't ride in the back of a truck. They think it's cooler to ride on the hood.

Re: Can you still ride in the back of a truck in your State?
I think you can with a 'fixed seat' and seat belts, but you would probably get pulled over and hasseled.

Boy does that bring back some great memories! I can remember loving to take a ride in the back of Granddad's (now mine) truck. His hobby was wood working and cabinet making. I recall helping him load up the scrap wood and hauling it off to the landfield. Granddad would let me sit on the top of the bed rail and wedge myself in between the fender mounted spare tire/carrier and the back of the cab. He would tell me to hold on to the front of the bed end gate with one hand and the other hold on to the braces for the spare tire/carrier. And of course "don't stand up". I also recall having to brush the chalky white original paint off my "britches" after sitting on the bed rails. Thank God for base coat/clear coat!! :) You put a little kid in the back of the truck like that these days and paranoid person behind you is on a cell phone calling the police and child protective services! |
Re: Can you still ride in the back of a truck in your State?
Back in the day I would ride in the back on a 3-4 hour trip up north... many times. I remember getting there and being sunburned, bed junk in my eyes, and with a sore behind. What great times those were!!!
When the laws changed I took the afore mentioned suberu seats out of a junker and mounted them in the back of my '59 willys pickup, seatbelts and all. I removed them after I couldn't take the abuse from the local P.D. any longer. Thanx for bringing back a good memory. JJ |
Re: Can you still ride in the back of a truck in your State?
in wisconsin its legal as long as your 16, sitting down, and not touching the tailgate.

Re: Can you still ride in the back of a truck in your State?
I let my 9 yr old ride in the back of the pickup but I place him spread eagle on the bed and tie 'im down with a good set of ratchet straps. I just hate it when a load shifts around on ya drifting around corners and stuff...
Honestly, I wouldn't let the dog ride in back much less a kid. Kills me how when we were young we used to all pile into the back of the pickup, race up the winding two lane roads into the mountains to go camping and not really think twice about it. Didn't know what seat belts were... on long trips with the family I used to curl up and sleep on the ledge under the back window of the car... times sure have changed. |
Re: Can you still ride in the back of a truck in your State?
All these laws protecting us from ourselves is contributing to overpopulation and stressing supplies of natural resources. We just aren't dying off at the rate nature intended.
