This is a little wierd....
 

I have factory cruise on my '84 Chevy and it has worked fine until recently. I noticed the other day that when I push the button to set it, nothing happens. But if I then push the resume button it engages at the speed where I pushed the set button. :crazy: Have I just got a bad switch or is it something else? :confused:

I would try replacing the switch first. I had one do the same thing and the switch had a bad wire in it. This will require taking the steering wheel off and some of the column internals loose, so you can pull the old wire harness out and feed the new one in. NOTE: attach a small wire to the old harness and pull it through the column as you remove it, that way you have a wire to pull the new one back through with.

Thanks for the info. Is this a plug-in type harness and will I be replacing the entire signal arm with the switch? I also have variable speed wipers, will this complicate things? Thanks again, Jim

The cruise control is an integral part of the turn signal arm and the harness is "Plug-in" type. There is a small flat plug on the end of the wire that plugs into the module up by the firewall under the dash. To get the cruise repaired you have to buy the complete arm with the windshield wiper controls on it. So since you have "intermittent wipers" be sure to get one that has the indications on the arm. Also the cruise control wiring for the truck is longer than the cars, so ensure that it is for a truck. The turn signal arm, itself, is not the actual wiper switch, it only rotates the switch inside the column. The arm fits into the wiper switch inside the column, using a small tang that sticks out from the little rod which aligns with a slot in the wiper switch and that is what turns the wipers on. In most cases when you try to pull the arm out of the switch, the cruise control arm will disentegrate in your hands, don't worry--you were going to throw it away anyways. You will have a choice of either the chrome turn signal arm or a black turn signal arm, they will both work- it is just your choice as to what you want. (the black was used on later trucks, I use the black ones)

Thanks for all the info. That doesn't sound too awfully bad. I'll let you know how it turns out, I've never been inside a steering column before.
