grant steering wheel questions
 

i installed my grant gt steering wheel a couple months ago and it was the weirdest install i've done. i knew ahead of time the horn would go off the first time i connected the battery and of course, it did. so that event led me to tear up my column, since i needed to tighten some of the slack, and i thought i'd revisit the horn issue.

basically as the instructions say, put the canceling cam (which is also the part that contacts the horn button) on top of the horn spring loaded pin, then put the adapter for the wheel on top and bolt it down, essentially activating the horn by bolting it down. then run a pin with a wire and some other bs up to the horn cap on the wheel which does nothing for me. so has anyone installed a grant wheel, AND gotten the horn to function correctly? is there something i need to do to get it working?

Had 2 of these wheels, horn never worked w/ either :rolleyes:

mine works fine

The cardboard piece that the wire connects to.....it goes and snaps in the horn button and the spring holds the horn button up from touching any metal...you have to make sure the cardboard is snapped in the horn button

I have had 2 also and my horn always works. I followed those instructions to the letter and had no problem.

it's been years since I messed with a grant wheel, but my horn always worked on them.

I had a Grant steering wheel, and I found it particularly difficult to keep the brass plunger, spring, wire, and plastic cap down in that plastic tube on the cancelling cam while installing the "Post Cover" over it. I found that it worked well to put all the little components down in the plastic tube, fish the wire through the hole in the Post Cover, and then insert a slender screwdriver through the hole in the Post Cover to hold the little components in while sliding the Post Cover into place.

If the brass plunger or the spring are allowed to touch the Hub at all, your horn will blast all the time, like you experienced.

the problem was i put the spring in the plunger instead of plunger on top of spring. there fore the plunger touched the hub. i think another problem would be not snapping the cap on the cardboard right. well i guess i should of started by saying i fixed it and blasted the horn a couple times. thanks guys, now my steering column's done except for the play in the old shifter, but that problem's on the firewall where a wire holds it in park while i use a floor shift.

I've got an APC wheel (same thing though) and I managed to get the horn to work by modifying the little plastic spacer from the original wheel.I found out that the horn is a lot louder than you realize when the hood is open and your head is sticking in compartment hooking up the battery.;)

I've installed a few Grant wheels, the horn always worked but the way the horn cap fits over the "retainer contactor ring" (as the above drawing calls it), was always a bit cheesy. It never seemed like a really functional way to hold it in place. I'm thinking about getting a stock wheel off a 89-92 gm pickup for this very reason.

I installed a Grant wheel a few months back and had the same problem - the horn was always on. Turned out I pressed the Grant adapter on too far and it bottomed against the factory plate behind it (I'm still not sure how they expect it to NOT short out).

I pulled it back apart, made a custom gasket to insulate the two pieces and now it works great. :crazy:
