1980 Van tilt removal

How hard is it to remove a van tilt from a van?. It looks like (2) bolts under the column inside, (2) bolts on the steering shaft near the steering box and one nut with a cotter pin for the linkage. Am I correct saying it's only 4 bolts and a nut????

There is a plate near the bottom of the column that bolts to the floor with a few screws and there are the wires to disconnect. The TS harness has to be unplugged and the shift indicator light wire unplugs from the fuse panel.

Thanks. Are they actual screws or are they bolts that hold the floor plate on?

the screws hold the rubber to the floorboard, you can also just cut around it with a sharp knife, because you wont be able to use the rubber the ones in the trucks are different.

The 3/8 wrench needed at the rag joint needs to be a 12 point if I remember correctly.

Yes, 12 point they are usually rusted real good. I have also had good luck tapping an 11mm 1/4" drive socket on there.

If you decide not to cut the rubber sealing plate, you need to remove 5 sheet metal fasteners with a 10MM 6point socket. I find it easiest to remove the cross bolt on the steering shaft and wedge open the flange - one bolt instead of 2 on the rag joint.

I usually leave the steering wheel on to pull with when everything is loose.

Takes less than 15 minutes to remove at the pick a part. I then change steering wheels to the later truck 4 spoke or Camaro 4 spoke. The yard includes the wheel with the column - same price.
