Best place to get tie rod ends?
 

So, I was doing some matience on the truck today. And looks like my driverside tie rod needs replacing. Unless anyone has any tips as to how to stop the rod from rotating when trying to install a stubborn nut onto it.

I used some vice grips on the top of the rod, but then when it gets past a certain point, the vice grips no longer fit and there is just too much play to be safe.

Were taking the nut off or putting it on?

If it hangs going on, I would try to chase the threads on the stud with a tap. If it hangs coming off you might try spray some rust penetrant on the threads and run the nut off until it hangs up. When it hangs up, run the nut down tight again, spray with more penetrant and run the nut off again. Repeat the process until the nut will come off.

If it's spinnin when you're trying to tighten the nut down, it's time for a new tie rod end. Autozone has TRW tie rods and they're lifetime warranty.

Yeah, I figured it was just time to get a new one. Ill have to pickup one from autozone then. Id imagine its more trouble then its worth to try to clean the suckers with a tap and die. The only thing I may try is getting a new nut.

Get a new nut first.

Then, tap the end into place in the spindle snugly with a mallet or soft hammer. The taper of the tie rod end will seat firmly into the taper in the spindle. That will keep it from spinning so easily. That, combined with a decent nut, will allow you to screw it back on.

Alright, you happen to know the exact size? So I can grab one on my way home from work today?

It's late now, I know, but I'd guess off the top of my head, it's 1/2 inch fine thread. It's been awhile since I did a 73-87 tie rod end, but I think the nut is 3/4 inch wrench size, which correlates to 1/2 thread size.
