If unsure where its at take #1 spark plug out turn the engine until you feel a rush of pressure at the spark plug hole your timing mark should be at top dead center line dist. rotor up so it drops in at #1 plug should be only a slight timing adjust from there.

The last time I offered advice like this, I was told that it would be off on these newer trucks? Now I am really confused.

Re: Timing 98 Sliverado 305
i just copied this from another reply i made
A few weeks ago we did an intake on a 97 305, you need to check the timing mark on the balancer, make sure ita at tdc on #1, then take the dist cap off and there will be a mark around the outside that says 6 and one that says 8 point the rotor at 8 and make sure it is pointed in at 8 when its in, can't be off even one tooth on the gear. that sets the base timing and it should start and run fine. then it will throw a p1345 code this is cmp retartd, and you need a decent scan tool to set this, it needs to be +/-2 degrees above 1000 rpm. you adjust this the same as timing, Ryan |
Re: Timing 98 Sliverado 305
Followed the hanyes instructions. Work great!! Markings on the c.shaft and block line up when on the tdc. Setting the dist. as ryanroo stated b4 are correct just alil tricky getting it to set flat. No check engine light here timing was right on the $$. Thx fo the postings though
