Valve adjustment
I have a 88 GMC K1500 with a 5.7L and I just finished head gaskets in it.
After adjusting the valves by the book, the right side has a ticking sound. I followed the servive manual, set to number one firing and adjust the following, Exh. 1,3,4,8 Int. 1,2,5,7. Turn motor one turn and adjust Exh. 2,5,6,7 Int.3,4,6,8. I turned rocker nut one full turn after lash was gone. Can someone tell me what the ticking might be? Thanks |
Re: Valve adjustment
After you ran it you should do it all over again. Does it sould like its coming from only one or both sides?

Re: Valve adjustment
its messy, but I usually adjust them while its running for a final checkout. if you have a extra valve cover cut the top out and it will contain the oil better.
most of the time I only adjust 1/2 turn after the tick is gone, there was a issue years ago with the cams loosing their lobes when adjusted to 1 turn, I changed to a 1/2 turn and done so ever since. |
Re: Valve adjustment
It's only coming from the right side. The left side sounds great!
I have adjusted valves while the motor was running before, but I felt I would try it with it not running. So, I should adjust them again? Thanks |
Re: Valve adjustment
I would back each one off a little until they click and then tighten until the noise stops and then turn a 1/4 turn more. This is done while the motor is running, and you do one at a time.
