HELP..Problems with charging system on 69!
I own a 1969 C/10...350/auto....In 3 years I have replaced 3 starters and 2 alternaters....I just put on alternator number 2 last week and it lasted one day before the lights went dim and the generator light came on.....The truck still ran for the next 3 days but finally quit and won't turn over now....I know the charging system is not working but can't find out why it is ruining the new alternator....PLEASE HELP.....I need some answers. is your harness all messed up? Look for corroded connections on your regulater and shors in the other harnesses, or real crappy repairs.

I bought the truck 3 years ago and have never done anything to it.....I have never touched the harness or wiring....The truck always ran strong and started fine.....I just put a new carb on and replaced the distributor with a new one.....I drove it 540 miles to Chicago without a glitch and now all of a sudden it craps out.....Thanks for the suggestion.....I will replace the voltage regulator next and even maybe the coil since I know the coil is original

Sounds like your regulator is screwed up. What style regulator in the truck, the new electronic style or the old adjustable kind?

I believe it is the old style regulator.....its a rusty black box mounted next to the radiator

Replace the regulator. I had a similar problem with my 72 c20 and it was the regulator causing the problem.

if it keeps up, run new wiring for the regulator and alternator *AND* new battery cables.

Throw away that regulator and spend the extra money for new alternator with built in regulator! It will make your truck run better and your life will be a lot easier. You can buy one that fits all of your brackets and not have to do nothing but bypass the wiring harness to the regulator.My father-in-law went through about five regulators before I got him to change over,and never had another problem after that.

You can buy internal regulated alternators on Ebay. New rebuilt 135 amp, for $48. Place called alterstart.

I had similar problems and it was the regulator. I bought the cheaper electronic solid-state one instead of the adjustable one but seems to work

Ochre/White/Ochre Runs well... working on body. Plan to get painted weekend before memorial day weekend. Planned to be done March 7 when I turned 16. Didn't happen. Chose to do better job and be behind schedule instead of 1/2 doing it and it looking like junk. |
I just got done converting to int. regulated(hands are still dirty) and it was simple. The alt was given to me, and the junk yard didn't charge me for the pig tail...they laughed at me when I asked how much.
