Not wanting to cut the dash....

3 Attachment(s)
I built a fiberglass housing for my Pioneer unit. I tried 3 times to put it in the glove box and because this deck has a roll out face it just wouldn't work in the glove box. So I cut the back of the housing to clear the heater cables and mounted it to the dash. I was trying to make it look like the old 8-Track units. Clean up and hide wires is tomorrows task. Now to find a Mint AM original radio. Another box came from Summit today, red anodized radiator cap , fule line, carb return springs....isn't this a gas!

Looks good! I also like the look of un-cut dashes.

Looks nice man. I assume this stereo has a remote? Otherwise I might want it closer to me for easier/safer operation while driving.

Welcome. Powell72 gave me the V8 towers so I wanted to do the same and give them to someone who needed them.

Thanks for the complement. Another shot of progress, this is the fun part:

Looks great Alex. I see your vac gauge, are you running air bags?

Re: Not wanting to cut the dash....

Thanks Larry...The truck is on all four wheels, tires and suspension also! You gotta see this stance and "rake" she has! I've got to look at your tie rod set up, make sure I got this right.

Stereo. Jeez...put it all in it's housing bolted to the paper GB liner, muscled it into place, hooked up the stereo...turned it on and it hit the GB door at the bottom when the face rolled open. Pulled it all out , moved the mount back two inches which ment cutting a hole in the back of the GB paper housing, put it all back., hooked it up...Still freekin hit. Pulled it back out, added a 5/8 base to raise it up, recut the GB paper housing, had it ready to go back in ,,,,and just didn't like the look of it.....so I scraped the in GB idea and went back to my original thought of somewhere under the dash. Lengthened the two bolts that hold the heater control....drilled the stereo housing and bolted it where you see it now. I'm done with stereo location...real done! Now to hide all the wires.

Aluminum fuel line is here thanks to Summit...so the bed will be coming off soon and fuelcellguy tank will go in and plumb fuel lines!!!

Larry I need directions to come see your set up/garage! Take more pictures. You around this weekend?

First of all, let me just complement you on the great job you've done on your truck. It looks incredible! You've made quite a few non-stock changes to your vehicle to bring it to your tastes (and in my opinion, made it better than stock). Why would the dash change you're line of thinking? Dig into that thing man, and put the radio where it belongs. I think it would look sharp, just make sure you do it right. Having two radios and a useless one in the dash for show?? (Not sure I undersatnd the logic? ) Just my .02 cents.

First I have to say Thank you, sincerely...I really have put my heart and sole into this "RESTO MOD". This truck is a Radio "Delete" truck with a "NO antenna hole Cowl". The dash is untouched, the original steel bed has not one even one dent or rust spot anywhere...so I just Can't cut the dash...just don't have it in me. PO told me this 6 cyl truck was bought and driven very little by an old man in CA and when he died his wife put it in storage for the last 25 years. So call me crazy but I can't cut the dash. The changes I've made are all reversable. I'm going to put a working mint condition AM radio, and I am fully at peace with the modern Pioneer in it's fibeglass housing under the dash. The black housing kinda dissapears into the black carpet. Thanks again for your kind words...oh and by the way...she said to tell you she go's by Lil' Red now that she finally has her dancing dress and fancy shoes on! LOL!

Thank you. Now if I can get my RED inner fenders back from my flakey painter   , that's really going to make the engine bay pop!

Re: Not wanting to cut the dash....

man, I really regret cutting my dash. Since my truck was my first car, I just HAD to have a new top of the line cd player in it.

It looks great, but it just takes away from the original look since everything else has been restored to original. Even though it didnt work, I wanted to put the original radio in it, but being a stupid 16 year old has prevented me from doing that! [disgusted]

Re: Not wanting to cut the dash....

I'll agree that this is a sweet looking truck... and to each his own, but i've always thought a radio under a radio looked ghetto... kinda like the hillbillies everyone had in there neighborhood that had there worrking TV on top of the non working TV... just my view... I do respect the opinion of not cutting it, just can't quite get into it. At least you mounted yours nice, I've seen some that looked almost like they used hose clamps or something.
Have you painted the glove box door yet? If not (or if you have a spare) try painting it black and see how it looks. Personally, I think it ballances out the dash, and the red seems to benifit from the black door more than any other normal color.
Even better would be a chrome glove box door with the center painted black...like the insterment bezel. That's what I've done to the longhorn. I have a chrome ash tray too, but have yet to paint the center of it.

Nice job. I wanted to do some sort of radio holder like that for my truck so I can have a CD player. I can't cut the dash out. It's too pretty.

Re: Not wanting to cut the dash....

Kelfine69, that's nice and clean looking but it wouldn't work with my deck. The face plate on a Pioneer 960 rolls down and forward about 2". I had my deck in the glovebox but just couldn't get it to where it looked good and didn't hit the GB door.
