New fuel pump in still no gas!
 

My 74' 3/4ton 4x stopped pushing fuel a few weeks ago. Pulled the fuel line at the carb and cranked the motor. No gas. I put in a new pump and believe to have properly held back that rod for a proper pump installation. threw a little gas in the carb, engine turned over for a second. Put more in engine turned over for a second.

I figured by then gas would be up to the pump.

What now?

My buddy said to disconnect the line into the pump then with a rag and mild air pressure push air into the gas tank . This technique would push gas out of the line that goes into the pump. Hopefully eliminating a bad line as the problem.

Any suggestions?

How about this. Eliminate the rag. And use a little one gallon gas jug with a small piece of 1/4 inch hose or whatever size it is. But the hose down in the gas, prime the carb and fire it up. It may take a couple tries of priming it, but eventually it should suck up some fuel. Also, I would crack the line loose at the carb, when it starts to seep from the line at the carb you know you have fuel, then if the motor runs using the gallon jug, making sure there is at least some gas in the tank hook the tank line back up and see if it'll continue to get fuel. ALSO PLEASE NOTE. Check the fuel filter, I had one on my old '77 4wd, plug up plum solid and wouldnt let nothin thru. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Do you have dual tanks?? My 80 with duals did this a year ago. I had just filled the left tank and was switched over to it (I thought) BUT, there was a short in the switch over circuit that defaulted to the Right Hand Tank!! Which was EMPTY!! Cost me 180 bucks of stupid money to have the best mechanic in town put 5 gallons in and start it up. AND he had me go get the 5 gallons!!

Check your switch and wires!!

Yes it's dual tanks. One is completely full. The other may have gas but I doubt it. I will try a few of these things. My buddy is a certified master tech and he always gets me PO'd when he comes over and figures it out in about 30 seconds.

Edit- As a matter of fact the left tank is the full one, hmmm.

The fuel valve for the dual tanks is not leaking is it. If so, it may be sucking air instead of fuel into the line. I'd probably check to make sure the fuel pump is working properly too. Also, could your fuel filter be clogged?

OK, further details: It was 17 degrees outside when this happened - so I thought frozen lines. Added a bottle of HEET and Lo - she started, and ran for about 1 Minute. I guess a pint of additive raised what was in the tank high enough to allow fuel to flow.

Just put some gas in the Right Hand Tank, prime the carb and start it up.

BTW - I replaced the fuel pump too. Look for shorts in the tank wiring.

Can't touch the truck till Sunday. I'm gonna print this page and take it with me.

What really sucks is this is my work horse weekend warrior. Dump runs and the whole nine yards ya' know. It's sitting in the back of my lot full of about 3000lbs of weeds.

FYI- It's a 74' with an 86front clip. Somehow the PO was able to get the Highway patrol and DMV to keep it a 74'. Nice!!!

Plugged up fuel line!

Pulled the line of where the tank switch is. No gas was pooring out. Blew into it (remember the tank is full to the cap almost) and gas starting pooring out. Hooked it back up and Vrooom!
