Electric fan question
 

I am installing the fan switch that came with the Classic heartbeat electric fan set up. The probe on the switch says to remove the upper rad hose and insert the probe and install the hose back over it. Is this how I should do it have seen others pushed thru the rad fins and such just wondering whitch way I should do it. Really dont want to remove hose and all. Let me know what you guys think and are doing.

Really? It wants you to put the probe inside the radiator? I put my probe between the fins near the inlet. (thats the hottest part of the rad I think)

I confirmed with wes it is to be inserted in radiator upper hose inlet.

the temp sensors designed to be imersed in the cooling system are alot more accurate and reliable IMO

Yes they need o be inserted inside the upper radiator nipple. The first thermostat that I sent you by mistake was one that gets inserted through the cooling fins. I purchased about 5 of those thermostats by mistake and haven't tried them yet to see if I like them. The reason that I created this system was so that you wouldn't have to poke stuff through your radiator core. Insert it in the upper nipple and follow the directions that I gave you and you will be a happy camper... lol I know that I shure have been. WES

Ok Wes I set everything up and Ran it, the engine temps are as follows. At idle (stop lights) between 190-195. at speed of about 25-40 195 at 45-55 between 195-200 on the interstate 200-205 never over 205 after about 5 minutes at 75. Sounds good to me how about you? (195deg thermo). Only thing that concerns me is took about 7 minutes for fans to shut off after stopped (it was cooling down in garage about 86deg outside and 90 percent humidity.) Does this seem long? Just dont want to kill battery. Also it kicked back on for about 1 minute then off again. I realize in colder weather and if it was outside it will cool down faster. other wise all good to go.

Sounds like you possibly have the temp on the fans set a little low. They will run for a few minutes after you shut your motor down because even though your motor is off it is still hot and the water is still pulling the heat out of the motor. I have even had them kick on a few seconds after the motor shuts off. It doesn't bother me because they shut off once the water cools down below the set point on the thermostat. Try turning the thermostat up about 1/16 of a turn and see what it does for you then. WES

About how long after I shut down should they run on a hot day? And how long before they might kill my bat?

also wes the tubing from the probe should not touch the raditor either or does it matter?
Also do my eng temps sound good? With a 195 deg thermostat at what temp should I be concerned with overheating. I would think up to about 225 or so would still be safe?

The temprature of your engine is a direct result of the temprature set point of the thermostat in your engine. The fact that the engine stays near that temprature tells you that the fan system is working to cool the water in your radiator, witch in turn cools the engine. How long that they take to cool the water also depends on how warm the temp is outside. The warmer it is, the longer that it will take. I haven't ever timed the fans once the engine shuts off, but those fans will run for a long time befor they run the battery dead. Just remember the cooler that you have the set point on the thermostat for the fans the longer they have to run to cool the water. It is up to you to strike a ballance of what is acceptible to you. As far as your engine temprature goes, (and what ever temprature your engine rises to) when the water exchanges from the radiator to the engine and your engine cools down it is working the way it should. That makes sense so I should raise the temp untill it no longer cools the water in the rad cooler than the water in the engine, And it would rise and rise and not cool down right? I think I am getting close. If it will cool it down to acceptable temps at idle then it should also when driving normally right with the exception of hard towing or something.

Ok think I got it now ran about 200deg steady when driving and about 195 at idle and ran for about 2 minutes after I shut it down then kicked back on for about 30 seconds and that was it.
