might be doing cam swap, help decide.....
Pretty sure I have a collapsed lifter, haven't torn it down to verify yet. If it is, I'll probably go ahead and do a cam/lifter swap since I don't know any of the current cam's specs (PO installed it). Thinking about these cams:
Comp 268H: 218/218 .454/.454 110lsa (1500-5500 rpm) Comp 265DEH: 211/221 .42/.465 110lsa (1500-5750 rpm) Comp 275DEH: 219/229 .452/.482 110lsa (2000-6000rpm) Comp XE268H: 224/230 .477/.480 110lsa (1800-5800 rpm) Motor is a 355 with stock iron heads (mildly ported according to PO), I assume 76cc chambers?(no clue here), performer rpm intake, edel 1405 carb, longtubes/2.5" duals, muncie 4 speed, 3.42 rear gears. No idea on bottom end or pistons. The current cam is aftermarket, has a tiny chop to it at idle, so I think my current valve springs are probably ok (only 12k miles).....would like replacement cam to have close to same overlap, maybe a hair more. Not gonna say no to a bumpin' idle.:cool: Anybody have any input? Other recommendations? The 224/230 is probably as big as I'd go. |

You might also consider a crane E seiers 266. It's close to the comp 265 but has slightly more truck friendly atributes. It also idles like a dream. I have one in my 383 and if you do any highway drving the fuel economy is amazing @2600 I get close to 22MPG. :eek: |

Those cams don't need screw in studs IMO, but I would go with a XE262 or even better a lunati voodoo equal.

The Comp Cams company profiles their cams with a sharper drop off of the top of the cam lobe. This is where the slightly choppy idle originates. The Crane Cams and Lunati have a slightly different slope and it provides for a longer ramp down off of the tip. This type of cam IS more friendly and will have a longer life over the Comp Cams. Don't get me wrong, I love the work Comp does and I am even running a roller comp cam in my 383 stroker on my 84 GMC, but I have had experience with the others and their profile is a good thing to look for.

Back in the 60's there was a cam for the vet 327 that put out 375 hp. It came factory with solid lifters. I don't know how it would work for you, but I had a lot of fun with it in a 400 with hydraulic lifters and a high vol oil pump. A 1 ton van with 4.11's that can turn 6000 rpm made it quite the insulter.
