My 1982 silverado......
Well............. she has been retired... put out to pasture... put out of her misery... :whine: Got my wife a 97 s-10 Blazer LT, will have pics tonight.. My poor 82 was on her last leg anyways.. going to swap parts I need onto the 87, and perhaps make a trailer out of the rear half, my father is wanting the motor for his 65 K10.. I wont be selling any parts.. plan on getting another 73-87 project.. perhaps a shortbed this time... maybe a 4x4.. will have to wait and see...

Damn man that's sad to see that truck retired like that. I still remember you driving it when we all met at Dave's the first time. Sucks that it had come down to that but I understand about realizing when too much is too much. But the 87 is still in the family and be a daily driver for you.

Re: My 1982 silverado......
I always cringe when I see an old Chevy/GMC cut into a trailer. I drive past a 60-66 chevy trailer almost daily and the box is in great shape. It makes me wonder if back in the day someone cut up what would be a perfect project truck today just to make a trailer.
On the other hand, I talked to a wrecker once that loved to cut up chevy trucks because he could sell the trailer for the price he paid for the whole truck and still had the driveline left over and any other parts he could sell. |

i have seen you do so much to it i am suprised to see it go before the GMC. All the flexing and stuff and the Baja look. What are the plans for the 87 other then a stock DD? and might i ask what finally killed old 82? Good luck with it man hope you get a short bed soon to fill up the spot!:metal: :metal: |
Re: My 1982 silverado......
if youll remember I rebuilt the whole front end (suspension and steering), while I was under there I had noticed the frame cracking mroe and more. There was already a large hole (I had posted pics in my front end rebuild thread), I had that temp fixed but now it has gotten worse and the frame is also cracking where the front crossmember for the suspension connects to the frame. I guess all that "flexing" paid the toll.. Due to the cracks and hole I was experiencing what can only be called the "death wobble". My truck would shake so violantly because the tires were wobbling (steering wheel did not move) that each side of the truck would dang near come off the ground. anything I kept in the door pockets would end up in my lap and on the floor. It was to the point it wasnt safe. The way I look at it, I can use the good parts to rebuild the GMC and make it nicer then save the rest for my future project.. the 82 will never really leave... its spirit will live on in a couple different trucks.. I have had the 82 for 10yrs so it is hard to see it end like this. But, like Brandon said.. too much is too much. All the money that I have put into the 82 wont be wasted, like I said, most of it will be put on the 87 GMC.

Re: My 1982 silverado......
I didn't know the frame was that bad of shape Jon. You made the right call it parking it. You would have to be driving it and the frame give way and hurt yourself or someone else with no way of controlling it. Like you mentioned the 82 will live on wih the 87 and another project. Most of the parts should swap over to the 87 when needed on the suspension etc.

Re: My 1982 silverado......
Thanks for sharing. With the 87 are you going to run the wheels and tires from the 82 or is it going to be more of a stock or steet look?
Thanks agian and good luck |
Re: My 1982 silverado......
Sorry I left out the plans, for the moment it will stay at stock height with current wheels and tires. I plan to re-gear the rear end and then I will put the large tires on it. May not go with the whole prerunner look this time.. but 235s just look too small in the fenderwells. I would like to have a nice truck...so I am going to try and clean up the good body panel from the 82 and use them to replace the dented ones on the 87. Would like to have it a color other than primer grey so I am going to attempt to match the blue. The front clip currently doesnt match up exactly... I want to keep the MPG at its best... so the large tires are up in the air at the moment.

Re: My 1982 silverado......
Sorry to hear about the 82, Jon. That was one of the first trucks I remember seeing when I got my internet all those years ago. I remember because I was looking around for other Oklahoma chevy trucks.

Re: My 1982 silverado......
well atleast you still have a cool truck to drive :)
hows the '87 doin on gas? overdrive AND efi... very nice |
Re: My 1982 silverado......
If I keep my foot out of it, I get 16-16.5 around town... not sure on the highway, dont drive it on the highway enough. I dont even keep it in OD when I drive it. Its nice, the smaller tires and lower 1st gear sure seem to get up and go alot more than the old beast...
