A/C wiring harness connector resistor missing
 

I have a '71 Cheyenne with factory A/C. The harness connector at the compressor has a jumper resistor between the the two wires that is missing. I have a service manual but it only calls the resistor a "rectifier" in the schematic and no other mention. I need to replace the resistor but have no idea with what value of resistor. I can look up the correct stripes and stuff myself but I need to know the value. Now the A/C fuse just blows instantly every time I try to use the A/C. HELP!!

I don't know if this will help much but my Haynes manual shows this jumper to be a diode which is sometimes referred to as a rectifier. I don't have a wiring diagram older than an 87 so I'm not sure if they used those on the 70's or not.
A diode only allows current flow in one direction so if it is wired direct then it may be a short to ground which would blow the fuse. The diagram I have shows the diode jumper between a green wire and a black wire. The black wire is grounded. Does the symbol in your schematic show an arrow with a line on top of the arrow tip? This is the symbol for a diode.

You can get a replacement connector with the diode from NAPA. If you need the number, let me know; I'll find it.

So could I use a simple 3 amp diode with.... say... a 50V peak inverse voltage? I really don't want to hack the original harness if I can avoid it. these also come in a 200 PIV but that may be overkill.

The replacement connector may still be the answer to you problems, even without hacking the original harness. If you can remove the diode from the connector and install it on your existing connector, then you're sure you've got the right one. Either that, or you could simply ask them to let you look at it, get the info from the didode, and then run to your friendly neighborhood Radio Shack for the correct diode. Just a couple of ideas
