GMC dashes are NOT black...mask & paint!!!
3 Attachment(s)
GMC's just don't look right with a contrasting glovebox and a repro black & chrome dash bezel. You have to mask them & paint. Yes, it is a touchy job, but aren't the results worth it?
Be patient, blue light-stick tape, clean it up before it sets real hard and the trick is: your thumb nail will carefully remove the extra that will get on the protruding thin chrome edges around the gauges...really. What do you mean I am just playing with my new little digi can?????:o |

Cool,Frank.I have an all chrome one I bought to paint blue for my Sierra.I`ve been hemmin`n` hawwin` about how to mask that lip and if the chrome would lift or anything. You`re a detailin`fool here lately with this and the bands for painting wheels.Any more neat little tid bits?71/72 GMC grille accent, etc? This is some of my favorite stuff to do on trucks.

Re: GMC dashes are NOT black...mask & paint!!!
So my '70 GMC blue dash bezel with chrome letters and trim is factory and not a PO paint job? The other parts I thought the PO painted are the stering colum, the ash tray and the glove box door. The blue is just a bit darker than the rest of the cab.

My '67 was Terrace Blue on the outside, and Fawn on the interior. The dash bezel was a two-toned gray, and so was the glove box door. I like the way Chevy did it better, so the interior is getting painted the same as the exterior, and I m using a Chevy chrome and black bezel.

If a GMC had a black interior the instrument panel and glovebox door was black. So there, smarty pants.(j/k?)

Nice job Frank!. The key is to use satin. That fawn color looks great.

Re: GMC dashes are NOT black...mask & paint!!!
My GMC had a black inst panel and a black glove box door. I liked it so much, I did my chevy like that... but I started with a chrome door so now it has chrome edgeing, just like the inst panel.

Re: GMC dashes are NOT black...mask & paint!!!
While not correct for a 67 Chevy, I painted my gauge bezel to match the color of my truck. Also, for those that are paint their chrome bezels, before the paint dries, take a small rag or q-tip with thinner and gently rub the (headlight/wipers/choke) letters to bring the chrome back out. Looks sweet...
I also had my glovebox door chromed and then painted the inside of it so it would match the gauge bezal.... http://www.johnnyrods.com/67truck/images/dashbuilt.jpg |
Re: GMC dashes are NOT black...mask & paint!!!
Nice color...
try getting one of the silver sharpies to paint in the "Lights" & "Whipers" again. The point is just right for hitting those areas. |

Thanks for the clarification Special-K. I was pretty sure my GMC had the original interior. However, I was never sure why it had the black glove box door.
