Hot week working on the garage
 

Had the week off so I spent it working on my garage project. Got the metal on the front and the loft framed in. Lots more to do but its moving along!!!!

40 x 80.........it now has 17' ceilings. The loft is 16 x 40 and will eventually house an office, bedroom and a bath/kitchenette

Damn I'm jelous, my next house will have all of that and none of the
other useless stuff like bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, etc.....

What did you use for your floor joist in your loft? I am getting ready to build a shop and would like to put in a 10x 40 loft and was wondering what size board I need for the floor joist, I'll only be spanning 8 feet with a 2 foot overhang past the support beam. Looks good!!!

Spanning 10' you could get away with 2 x 6's but I would recoment 2x8's

I used 2x10's with a double header/nailer at both ends

Well it looks good,but I wouldn't clutter it up with stuf like rooms,Heat and AC would be a must though.


I can't really talk,one stall of my garage is my office,and the other 3 are for working.You can never have too much room though

Sweet! Thats no garage, thats heaven on earth! :D

So when do we poor the floor? I figured 40 cubic yards at 4" thick. Add a coulple yards more if the floor has low spots of course. Here is town 3000 psi straight cement goes for about $65 per yard so about $2600. OUCH! What concrete cost around Marietta? Just curious.

Thats the sole purpose of the loft...the bedroom office bath and kitchen. I wouldnt dram of cluttering the main floor up with anything other than vehicles.

I am going to pour it in thirds. The area under the loft and out to the small 2 garage doors will be first. That is the area where the car lift is going to be. Under the loft (9' ceilings) will be the work benches, tools, cabinets shelving, wood working stuff, motorcycle lift and stairs to the loft.

The area over by the big doors will be for larger trucks, RV, and so on. It really does not need concrete at the moment so it can wait for a while.I will pour that area a strong 5 inches thick and the rest about 4.

It will actually end up being closer to 65 yards of concrete and here in Atlanta we are arround $100 per yard..between $85 and $100.

So.....$6000 for a floor and $3000 for garage doors.......Its taken me 5 years to get this far on it so that might take a couple more!!!!! I plan to get the doors on it by the end of Aug. and start doing the electrical and plumbing over the winter.

But.....I look at it this way.......$12,000 more dollars will completly finish it.....thats what some idiots pay for a paint job and they have no place to store it!!!!

Thanks for the info 72!!! We are looking at $90 to $100 per yard for cement up here also, then I'm going to put in the tubing and under floor insulation for floor heat...sure adds up in a hurry. You are going to have a great shop there when you get it finished, and you can be proud to say you built it yourself!!

It looks like you started collecting trucks in a feild then built the garage around them.

Congrats it looks killer!!!!!!
