Non-a/c to a/c conversion?
 

What is all needed to do this? Is the firewall different?

Cut three vent holes in dash (some say replace dash, your choice)
Firewall is different (I cut out an a/c fire wall and welded it into mine)
You need these from A/C truck:
Grab inside fresh air vent with vacumn pod
Grab flapper vent under cowl and plastic bushing/nut
grab A/C control and mounting bracket from dash
compressor and brackets
A/C cone both inside cab and engine compartment including all vacumn lines, cables, and all needed firewall gromments.
Grab battery tray as it has bolt hole for A/C line bracket.
Grab A/C condensor in front of core support.
You can grab A/C core support or just drill the holes in yours.

BUT FIRST, TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES before you start taking A/C stuff off!!!

I am sure I have missed some small stuff, but if you take your time removing the A/C, you will see what you need....

I need to buy the a/c stuff. I don't have a single piece. Is it worth cutting the dash if you can get and a/c dash for a reasonable price?

firewall Here are the side vent templates. I have full size templates I can mail if you decide to go that way.

I am thinking about getting an a/c dash for around $60. I like this way seeings how the dash is already out of my cab. I would be interested in the templates for the fire wall. Let me know what I need to get you for them.

Vintage Air looks factory on the interior if you use the original outer vents(which I chose not to).

Not to mention it comes with EVERYTHING but the pulleys and a belt. They have great tech support and a warranty. Most importantly it keeps you chillin!

You're truck is very nice. Very clean. I love the interior. That is what is most lacking on mine. Did you get the truck in this condition or have to do a lot of stuff to it?

Thanks man. We found this truck about 5 hrs from home. The man had it for sale and wanted a couple grand more than was in my budget. I really wanted it due to he had owned it for 27 years and it had been garage kept for the last 20. He wouldn't take what I had to spend so I kept saving my $ and shopping around for something I could afford. Well after about 9 months I had the amount he wanted so I called him back. Somehow he remembered talking to me previously and told me if I still wanted it to come get it at my original offer! The truck had an older repaint on it but it was pretty nice, the interior was OK but needed some TLC. I ended up recovering the seat, I covered up what looked like new carpet with a rubber mat. I put in a new dashpad instrument bezel and lens. Of course I had to install the Vintage Air system as well. I had all the glass removed and the white parts were repainted. When it went back together everything got new rubber seals. Under the hood looked like dammit compared to the rest of the truck when I got it. We did a lot of cleaning but there is still room for improvement. I added some odds and ends under there for reliability and to give it some more grunt. We also lowered it a little to get it where we wanted it. So to answer your question........It wasn't exactly in this condition, but it was far from being a dog. So I guess, Yes, I have done a lot to it.:lol:

IMHO, Vintage is the only way to go, unless your into the OE look ;)

I FOUND THE PERFECT AC CAB A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO AND I HAVE STARTED GETTING IT READY FOR SMOOTHING OUT THE FIREWALL. tHE DASH IS UNCUT AND IT IS ALMOST IN PERFECT CONDITION. nO RUST ANYWHERE BUT IN TWO SMALL PLACES IN THE FLOOR. EVEN THE KICK PANELS ARE PERFECT. BUT AFTER LOOKING AT THIS POST I GOT A LITTLE WORRIED. I DON'T KNOW IF I SHOULD SMOOTH OUT THE FIREWALL NOW BECAUSE I WANTED TO PUT IN THE VINTAGE AIR SYSTEM. IT LOOKS LIKE YOU HAVE SOMETHNG BOLTED TO YOUR FIREWALL WITH THE SYSTEM. SHOULD I NOT SMOOTH IT OUT OR WOULD IT HURT.. dOES THE SYSTEM USE THE EXISTING HOLES?

why couldnt someone add a a/c cooler inside the heater box . wouldnt it be easer to do some fibergass work to the box . electric switch in glove box for compressor clutch ( off / on ) ? just wondering

The system goes through existing holes. The cover on the firewall comes with the system. I have seen people smooth their firewall and use an aluminum bulkhead for the lines to pass through. I think this mod causes you to have your lines custom made. My entire system is straight from the box.

wHAT ABOUT EXSISTING FLAPPERS OR PARTS FROM THE ORIGINAL TRUCK. bESIDES AC BALLS, DO i NEED TO KEP ANYTHING ELSE?

If you want to use the factory a/c controls, then you need to use the sure-fit system for our trucks. With that system, you don't want to shave your firewall completely because the hard lines coming off of the evaporator stick through the firewall just a bit.

If you're not concerned with using the factory controls, then you should use one of their Gen IIunits which is electically controled instead of the cables. With that system you can shave your firewall, but will have to have a bulkhead somewhere to get the lines into the engine compartment.

If one was going to cut the firewall versus replacing it with one from a factory air truck, what's the best way to do it?

If you are going to use the existing A/C vents that's all you will need to save. Everything else is going to be removed and replaced with new items. I bought a Vintage Air system for a non-air truck using factory air controls. My first truck uses factory controls for a non-air truck and I don't like it near as much as the other.

So your saying that I can remove all the flappers and donate them to this board to people who need them....? I also would like to know where you guys got the picture of the bulkhead or if you guys know where I could find an aftermarket one.
