Transmission Rebuild Kit

I have a 72 GMC 3/4 ton 2wd Burb. My mechanic took a quick look see at the transmission and said that I might need to be rebuilt. Maybe completely. I am not sure what transmission is in it.

Is there a kit I can buy for this rebuild, or will he have to get parts as needed? Maybe I can buy a kit now and get ready for the labor bill later.

This is not a WTB ad, I am just trying to prepare for the worst, and get my pocketbook ready!!!!

Thanks
Jeff

well summit and jegs sell total rebuild kits for th350 and th400 transmissions if you need to know the part number or price let me know but those transmissions aren't that costly to rebuild so it won't be all that bad

Re: Transmission Rebuild Kit

In my experience, (93 suburban and 2 trannies in 6 years), it is cheaper in the long run to buy a new trans rather than rebuild the old one. Parts may be cheap but the labor costs are the killer. My 4L60E was less than $1500 installed with a two year warranty. Turbo 350/400's should be cheaper as they are not electronic. I put a 700R4 in my 68 for less than $1500 as well.
