Does anyone have advice for setting up a posi carrier or a picture of the wear pattern that should be seen with the marking compound?

Last week, or week before last on Muscle car or was Trucks on spike tv that showed how to rebuild the rearend.

What I did see when the put the paint on the big gear(the whole width of the gear about 4 inches long), and spun the pinion until the painted section had came back around. If the area were there is no paint is the area that tells you where the gear is going to be wearing.

If it is to the outer edge or the inner edge, then you need to rehim, or take out a shim for the pinion to correct the problem. You want the wear directly in the middle of the gear, this is dead on.

The diagrams I have at home show it being an oval sort of wear. Almost like if you did a print with a finger in the paint where it blends into the paint rather than a sharp edge from where it's wearing to where it wasn't touching. You don't want a really clear mark where the edge of the gear dug through the paint because that's the point of the gear rubbing rather than the flat part of the teeth.

Go get a copy (I just received it in the mail, so it may not be on the shelf yet) of Custom Classic Trucks, they have an article on adding a limited slip to a rearend and it show the backlash and wear pattern.

I will go try to find the custom classic trucks. which month is it? I have almost all of the parts in and will be ready to setup everything in the next week or so.

The booklet is very straight forward and has very good pictures showing various wear patterns and corrective actions for wear patterns that are not ideal.

Also, I do not fully understand what you are trying to accomplish. Are you trying to setup a posi carrier only or are you trying to setup the entire rear?
Are you changing R&P gears or just the carrier or both?

If the carrier did not come stock with the rear (ie.. swapping out carriers) you might want to read the above referenced booklet very thoroughly before starting for information on shimming the carrier properly, etc...

The Technical Help section of the above website link has other areas concerning carriers specifically as well as other general information.

I just got done building a rear for my Camaro, so this stuff is still fresh for me.

After doing the work of properly setting up the rear end, I began to understand why some people can justify spending $2.5 to $3k for a bolt in unit.
