Federal regulations on 2007+ diesel engines

So, what have you all heard. I would sure like to buy a new Duramax 2500 but if the Feds are going to outlaw them or diesel fuel  then why bother buying one?

and shut down our entire shipping industy? Right

What IS going to happen is VERY strict regulations on all new diesels built in either 2008 or 09? I think '09.

My mom works for Cummins. They already have an engine ready that meets the new regs. GM has also announced their new diesels for '09 will meet the new regs as well.

Re: Federal regulations on 2007+ diesel engines

In MD we already have ULSD in our county fleet fuel sites. The new Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel will be available everywhere. The 2007 and up vehicles have to comply with the new emissions regulations and it will be illegal to fuel them with the old fuel. The new fuel will work in all diesel powered vehicles. It will be much like the switch to E 10 unleaded. You may notice a slight decrease in power and fuel mileage, but in most cases it should be un noticeable. It is also advised that you change your fuel filter shortly after changing to the new fuel, as it has scrubbing properties and will break loose scale, etc. from inside the fuel system. I have a fleet of 1000 vehicles here in Harford County and we recently switched to the ULSD without incident, and with no driver complaints. About one third of our fleet is diesel powered. There will be a small sticker on the diesel pumps to let you know you are using ULSD. Hope that helps everyone, let me know if you have any more Questions. PM me, because I am mainly on the 67-72 site.

You could NEVER outlaw diesel fuel. America, well heck, even the whole world would just crumble to itty-bitty pieces without diesel.

Re: Federal regulations on 2007+ diesel engines

As centsless said it is like we are reliving the 70's again (for those of us old enough to remember). Kind of like going to unleaded diesel, but in this case it is low sulfer diesel. Probably some other stuff, but the words are too big for me to remmeber. Supposedly by the end of 2007, that is all that can be sold at the pumps. However, I see it being delayed form 100% complainace for a bit longer like centsless mentioned.

Rumors are going around here in Washington that our state is going to outlaw diesel engines being bought or sold. Rumors are just that...rumors. This would only apply to light duty trucks and cars.

Re: Federal regulations on 2007+ diesel engines

Outlaw...won't happen.

Two things to think about...Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel = less sulfur in the diesel (DUH). What this ultimately means is LESS LUBRICATION for injectors and pumps! AMSOIL has a new product that will compenstate for this. It's called Diesel Concentrate (part # ADF.)

Also, there will be a new API oil spec (CJ-4). This 5W-40 weight will be available from AMSOIL December 1, this year. It will be a full synthetic.

Hope this helps!

Every other guy here at work has a diesel of some sort and I haven't heard anything about that?

Re: Federal regulations on 2007+ diesel engines

Maybe you diesel guys can tell me this: What's up with the signs at the pump the say "Federal regulations prohibit use in 2007 and later vehicles???"

Does this mean new diesel is coming to a station near me soon??? Can the 2007s run on the 2006 diesel or do I have to use an additive?

ain't_done_yet 10-24-2006 02:52 PM

Re: Federal regulations on 2007+ diesel engines

If it says it's prohibited in '07 and later (newer), that means it is NOT the new ULSD. The diesel that's readily available today will damage the new '07 engines. The '07 (& newer) diesels require this Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel. That's all that will be around come 2010.

Now, the '06 and older diesels can use the ULSD, but it would be recommended that you do use some additive (such as that available from AMSOIL, as mentioned above) to help put some lubricity back into the fuel. Lower sulfur means less lubrication means more wear on injectors and pumps.

Same thing is happening w/the oil for the '07 diesels. New oil spec is CJ-4.

I can get you more detailed info if you'de like...hope this helps.

Well our great state (ha ha ha being sarcastic) has outlawed the sale of desil cars that was started in 04 or 05. So that means you can't buy a new car like a volkswagon that is desile powered. but you can sell and buy pre 04 cars that are desil powered

I would like more information please. I could call the dealership but they like to see money before they talk tech with me...and then after I buy they don't have time.

I know they are selling 2007's right now and these guys are using the fuel at the pumps that have the fed stamp...soooo...there's gotta be something to that.

Re: Federal regulations on 2007+ diesel engines

As far as I know, the 07 diesels are not available yet. ( I know that the HD trucks are still using the 06 emissions packages) Talk to the dealer. Tell them that if they can't explain it, you'll buy it from someone else. It's amazing how helpful a salesman can be when you turn to walk away! Any good salesman will be more than willing to talk to you about the new regulations.
