You're looking for Classicchev i think. I understand he's a cabinetmaker and makes the bedwood on the side. Not sure about the kit though, think its just the wood

Bought mine thru Classic Ind. but believe they got it from Mar-K or something like that!
If I did it again, I would deal with Bruce Horkey some where around Minn. That's all he does and a good person to deal with. You can actually ask him questions, unlike a big corp. that doesn't seem to care after you buy the kit JMHO

Mar-k makes the kit and I have not used it,but I hear they are very nice.

It's actually called Bruce Horkey's Wood & Parts out of MN. I got the wood, strips and bolts from him at least 10 years ago. Very nice guy and everything fit perfect. Highly recommended!!

Re: wooden bed floor kits?

MAR-K makes them and they are "Quality Parts" like all the parts we make. We also include bed assembly instructions with your restoration parts order. Hope this helps.

Re: wooden bed floor kits?

This will sound like a shameless plug here, but ... I have seen 3 of MAR-K's kits installed and both of the owners having those trucks swore it was the easiest install they'd ever done. They are absolutely beautiful.

I have seen many kits on many trucks...but few of them looked as nice as MAR-K's

I am going to be upgrading my bed wood and strips in the near future. I know who I'm going to be shopping with :)

I just wish someone would make the wood kits with Apiton Wood. All I can find is oak and pine. Apiton is used on trailer beds and has that dark rich red color. Thanks Guys I guess I will prob get a oak set fron mar-k

Hey Rick,

I am getting a hook up for some bedwood, I will ask to see if he can get/do apiton....

classicchev 10-06-2006 01:16 AM

Re: wooden bed floor kits?

Thnaks for the plug Dave. I do bedwood, but it seems I can not compete with Mar K in Oak or Pine, but I will manufacture any kind of wood, were they will not.

Are you sure Apiton is a wood?? I have never heard of it before, or is there another name for it?

Searched with google and its spelled apitong, very similar to white oak in strength and hardness, but the white oak will be ALOT easier to find.

Have two cabinet companies that the owners are members of a local car club that I just joined......

Will see if either one of them can help me with that.

Manufacturing the wood is easy, the challange is finding nice wide boards in the material of choice. GMC pauls website is great info on teh bedwwod. Anyone with a little skill and a tablesaw can make there own wood. If anyone has any questions, i probably can answer them for you.

Darren, They use apiton on flatbed trailer beds, I used apiton when I put new wood on my 45' flatbeds. It looks kind of like teak and mahogany.

I have never pulled one of these beds apart, but I was under the impression that the edges were routed to accomidate the metal strips... am I incorrect?

Re: wooden bed floor kits?

Jerry, Yes they are. I would cut my own for the bed I'm working on if I had the measurements of the boards. They bed I have most of the boards were gone and the ones left were damaged. Maybe someone might have the right measurements?

Re: wooden bed floor kits?

Go onto the GMC paauls website, they have the exact detail of what is required for the dado for the matal strips. I would use a table saw first, if you have a shaper maybe, but I wouldnt use a "normal" router unless you had a table setup with a jig. The table saw with dado blades is still the easiest. The bedwood is easy to make, it takes me about 2 hrs to make a setup, and that includes sanding. BUT I also have the tools, just like anything else its all in the tools.

The only problem I see with using that type of wood is when you go to finish the wood. Unless you arer going to stain the wood dark, or your truck is going to match the reddish burgandy color that the wood will end up when the clear is applied, Im sure it will be fine. The nice thing about oak is a neutral colour and can be stained to anything.

I really like quarter sawn white oak, it has Character, harder than red oak, and it finishes up nice. Here is a pic of a board member I did a white oak set for

These are just my opinions, Im sure some will agree and even more will disagree.

Speaking of tools, what did you use to inlet the large SS washers under the carriage bolts for the body mounts? I haven't installed them yet? Jim
I'm sorry, I forgot to compliment you on the nice work that you do, bed looks great!
