Cleaning/painting of head liner panels
 

We are finally getting my son's 72 Burb painted as it has been apart since 2001!

The head liner panels are in good condition but they are dirty and stained. I would like to clean the panels and recoat them before reinstalling. Please let me know any suggestions on cleaning and/or painting of the panels that have worked for you.

I just plan to use the originals as patterns for new ones. You can get similar material at Lowes/Home Depot, just without the holes. If you have to use the originals for some reason I'd avoid getting them too wet while cleaning. Maybe some prep-all type wax and grease remover on a cloth to wipe them down before painting.

As stated previously, Lowes/Home Depot sells 4x8 sheets of a white plastic/fiberglass located in the Panelling department....BIG O used these in the fabulous redo of his Burb some years ago and it looked great.

Another option might also be available to you...if the panels (as you describe) are in good condition, they can be "recovered" as original using headliner material obtained from any upholstery shop (and glued over the originals). This will retain form/fit and appear as original for most onlookers. Saw this done to a 67 Burb at PF and it was difficult to tell from the original. Same hole pattern, etc.

Have also used a mixed solution of vinegar with hot water to remove stains/mildew, etc from our Burb headliner.

i once degreased and repainted the headliner dash and the rearshelf under the rearwindow with a rattle can ,i used a darker colour and it came out nice actually the headliner was made out of carboard and had that carpet type stuff on it .
as long as you dont put youre feet on it it will hold just fine

Thanks for the tip on cleaning the headliner panels. I want to try to save the originals but now I know some good options if cleaning/painting does not work.
