K&N AirFilters

Does anyone know how much horsepower a K&N High Flow will give you. Its a 14"x3" airfilter. Just wondering if it really does increase horsepower...Thanks Jason

I would think you'd notice more torque, but it made a difference in all 5 of my vehicles. Won't run without 'em anymore. The one on my Monte Carlo has been there for over 15 years and over 210,000 miles. Just keep 'em clean.

i got a k&n and i love it, hey what year is your monte carlo?

busterwivell 08-14-2002 03:38 PM

86 SS

Hooter 08-14-2002 06:39 PM

I have a 70 Monte carlo! iwill post pics of it in week or so

gabet40 08-15-2002 12:07 PM

i just put mine in last thursday and easily noticed the difference, especially around 3000+ rpms

Mudder 08-15-2002 01:15 PM

For sure!

Very good investment!

devinfife 08-15-2002 01:48 PM

i bought one. it makes your exhaust note sound much better and now the truck pulls pretty good in 3rd gear with the secondaries open. i would say buy one.

white68chevy 08-15-2002 01:52 PM

I was thinkin about buying one also. How hard are they to keep clean and how often should you clean one?

busterwivell 08-15-2002 02:21 PM

I buy the cleaner and oil at the local hot rod shop. spray the cleaner on, hose it off, let it dry, spray the oil on, reinstall and enjoy. I do it any time my filters look dirty.

Project1970 08-15-2002 03:12 PM

I won't run a car without them anymore. There's honestly a seat-of-the-pants difference between it and the stock filter / housing setup...I had to switch it back to stock for a little bit and while the pressure on the pedal told me the secondaries were opening, my butt was begging to differ. ;)

we want to see a picture of your 86 ss!!!!!!1

How many of you are using the 14x3 KN with the stock air cleaner ?Or are you using an aftermarket ?

Thanks Bill:bowtie:

busterwivell 08-15-2002 04:34 PM

I agree, even my wife noticed the difference on her Tahoe, that was a little more involved installation than a 14x3!

dmnall 08-15-2002 05:35 PM

On my 68, I am running A 10" aircleaner (AC Delco) with 10" x 3" Air Filter and I can see a difference since when I was running just the Delco Paper Air Filter that came with my air cleaner! I am also running one on my 94 GMC and I will never buy any other airfilter but K&N!!

:bowtie: I'VE GOT EM ON BOTH MY BLAZER & MY PICKUP. I PUT THEM ON THERE WHEN I BUILT THE MOTORS, SO I REALLY COULDN'T SAY ABOUT THE IMPROVEMENT IN H.P. OR TORQUE, BUT I WOULD RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYBODY, FOR ANY APPLICATION.:)

In my (humble) opinion, the amount of difference you notice will depend upon what was on there before. If you had an enclosed unit with the snorkle on it, simply turning the lid upside down will make a difference, Going from that to an open filament will be a big improvement. From there to a K&N - probably better, but the big advantage is that you are through buying air filters.
Notice the lid on junkyardjohn's. It also has the K&N lid. Bet that helps a lot.
The engine is an air pump. Air in - Air out. The more the merrier.:(over-simplification - but it sounds good) :)
I run a K&N on my Grand National. Big difference over stock. Saving my allowance to do the same thing on the truck.

Project1970 08-16-2002 04:55 AM

Well, yeah, I didn't just change the element, I went to an open-element K&N in a pretty chrome housing...

Oh, and it's five inches tall. ;)

We also have one on our '94 Z28, the whole "FIPK" (Fuel Injection Performance Kit) setup - and it was good for at least two tenths on the quarter mile. Again, probably, most of the difference was from going to filter-box to open-element, but still...it's worth it.

KN filter

I have a brand new KN 14X4 air filter element for sale. Oil too.

junkyardjohn 08-16-2002 02:30 PM

:bowtie: I'M INTERESTED IN IT. HOW MUCH???:bowtie:

Hooter 08-18-2002 03:11 AM

I think you notice difference because the last air cleaner that was taken off was probly dirty and the K& N not dirty hence the differnece

Project1970 08-18-2002 03:24 AM

Nah, my stocker is still nearly bright white...I think I had put the new element in maybe a month before I got the K&N for my birthday.

How does the Accel air cleaner compare?
