Rear end swap

I'm not sure of the name of the rear end that I have, but it has no access to the gears from the rear of the truck, you get to the gears from the front side. Anyhow, would I be able to swap it for a 10 or 12 bolt unit? A guy I know has a 3.73 12 bolt that came from a 74 C10, he would let me have for $80.00 CAD. Would this be advisable?

My truck is a 72 C20 350/350 with 350 hp.

The 12-bolt is a VERY good rear end, but it's a half-ton; you have a 3/4-ton truck. Not only will the wheel bolt patterns not match, you'll loose capacity and ride height. Spring mounts may be different--I don't know--and in different places.

What little I can say without seeing pics/knowing more.

If yours has access from the front only it should be a 12 1/4 inch ring gear rear end which is much stronger. I think these came in 7500 lb and 11000 lb capacity. You will not have to worry about breaking it with your typical street engine setup.
