tar

There is hard dried tar allover the fender bolts so I can’t get a socket on them. I thought about melting it with a torch but decided to ask you guys first. What is the best way to get rid of the tar?

Re: tar

I've used mineral spirits before to get tar off the side of my truck before. Put it in a garden sprayer, spray it on and you can see the tar drip off.

OK, I know this is gonna sound WAY OUT THERE, but i've considered trying this but I havent yet. What about freezing the tar with liquid nitrogen like you can buy at the drug store as a wart freeze-off kit? If it worked you could just chip the frozen brittle tar off? If any one trys this be very carefull! or am I just crazy for thinking this....?

Re: tar

I've used a heat gun - think hair drier on steriods - to help soften tar and asphalt. This does make it easier to scrape off whatever it may be on. I have also used my 4 1/2 inch grinder with a 3 1/2 inch heavy duty rope wire cup on it to cut through the thicker layers. I would not use a torch as the tar could catch fire  - at the very least it would smoke reeeaaally bad!

I know what you mean! I hammered the damn socket on it! Im still not sure if it was tar or not but it seems like a mixture of 40 year old dirt and tar??
