3 on the tree to 4 in the floor swap

I would like to convert my 72' 4wd 3 speed colum shift to a 4 speed with a floor shifter.

I need to know what transmission to buy that will bolt up with a linkage and shifter change?

Anybody done this before that can give some advice on this project?

Thanks!

Welcome to the board. I took my 3 on the tree out of my 69 K20 and put in a 4 speed (SM465). You will need to get the 4 speed + the adapater to mate it to the NP205. I was told the 3 speed manual had a different size opening on the bellhousing - but others said that it would be the same as the opening on a bellhousing for a 4 speed manual. Your overall lenght shouldn't change as the adapters are a little different lenghts which keeps the overall lenght the same (at least it did on my truck but I have the Rockwell transfer case rather than the NP205).

The SM465 has the very low 1st gear - granny gear. You can look at newer 5 speeds but they are fairly expensive and you will have to get a costly adapter.

Thanks!

Where is the best place to get the adapter?

I was going to look for the tranny on Ebay because most of the salvage yards around here have been picked clean.

I guess it is optional to change out the colum or remove the shifter and linkage.

I would try to look for a cheap parts truck.Any 4x4 67-87 should have a sm465 if its a stick if I'm correct. They also had sm465 trannys in 2x4 trucks but that wouldnt help you with the 4x4 parts.
