Horn question 70 gmc sub NOW TAIL LIGHTS TOO?
Got a question? I am about to get my sub inspected. Had it now for about 6 months, got plates for it in August. The death of my F150 is pressing the GMC into service.
SO now the question.. I seem to be missing a part ofmy wiring harness. I ahve traced the horn wire, green from the horn to the plug under the dash, ith has three wires in it, one green, one red and I think one black. It plugs into nothing. I then traced the horn wire from the colum into a black wiring "tree" for lack of better word. from there it goes? I can jump the wiring that is coming from the horn but would rather either plug it back in or find what is missing... (relay) any ideas or experince with horn wiring, pointers or suggestions. Thanks, Thomas |
Re: Horn question 70 gmc sub
The three wires should go to the horn relay bolted to the firewall inside beside the column, I can take a pic for you if you like, Red is hot, black should be the ground from the horn button and green goes to the horn....

We looked for a relay but it was not there. Beleive me this truck has had some wiring done and redone to it over the years... I guess anything can happen in 36 years, right? I have some othere trucks but none are local. State inspection and the sub will hit the road legaly for the first time in 8 years. Thanks again! THomas |

Re: Horn question 70 gmc sub NOW TAIL LIGHTS TOO
Now that we fixed the horn, it was due to the missing horn relay, picked up at Orieley's and finding the pinched wire in the column.
We have to hunt down a new problem. The tail lights do not work nor does the dashboard lights. All of which worked before we "fixed" the horn. Of course we also fixed the reverse lights, license plate light too. Right now the fuse keeps blowing when you step on brakes and we cant get the dashboard lights on at all. Too late do do anyting about it tonight. Might end up needing to replace wiring harness as it is hacked up pretty bad with everythign from old towing setup to who knows how many radios and we did find out the Neutral saftey swithc has been bypassed also. Just wanted to say thanks for the help on the horn it works like a charm now. I appreciated the photo it showed me exactly what I needed to see. Thomas |
Re: Horn question 70 gmc sub
No Problem,
make sure that your light sockets are good and have good grounds, check the bulb for shorts, (There made in china and i have picked up a few that were put together wrong) get rid of any wiring that does not belong, make sure the black ground wire that hooks up to the dash(if you remove the cluster you should see it clipped to the dash) is there and has a good ground. I have rewired my truck from the ground up and it was simple, i can help if you need it.. Smitty |
