Starter trouble???? help :)
Hey guys--I just put a new starter in my truck, and the first day it fired up instantly and smoothly every time, no problems. Since then, though, when I turn the key, it "grinds," and takes a few seconds to start. I don't know much about starters/flywheels, etc., so I don't know what it might be. I haven't done anything to the truck since I put the starter in, so I was thinking maybe I got a bad rebuilt unit from the shop?? Any help would be great!

I had a problem with my starter one time. It kept breaking the nose cone of the starter. If you have a remote starter you can get underneath the truck and turn it over to see whats happening, or have a friend nearby. I ended up having to shim it and add one of those braces that go from the starter to the motor. Was talking to a friend after all the problems and he said to use the original nose cone and everything should mesh up as before. Haven't tried it so I don't know if it will work or not.

make sure your bolts are tight, then check your tooth alignment, a paperclip is the right gap from the top of the tooth to the bottom of the v in the ringgear(i think) then shim to fit.

You might have the wrong starter for your flywheel. Sometimes the teeth won't mesh right if the starter is too close to the block either, might try a shim.

My 71 402 was eatin' starters about every 3 months. I tried shims, everything sounded ok, but 3 months later, bad starter....I bought high torque mini starter and put on a year ago, no problems since. Put on on the Studebaker, too. Have a spare on the shelf waiting for the one in the 66 Chevelle or 86 Monte Carlo SS to go out.
