What SBC cams are people running??

I am running the Exterme Engergy Comp 268.
I mentioned this before in an earlier post that I was having a tapping/ticking noise and I thought it was anything from colapsing lifters to loose rockers.
Turns out after talking to Comp and Trickflow(my new heads I installed) that the Extreme Energy cam is a noisy cam in general. The exhaust lobe profile closes so fast that it slams the valve shut and makes noise. It sounds SO much like I'm driving around in a truck with loose rockers and it's beginning to make me a little nutty.

What 'quiet' cams are ya'll runnin'?

Im running a Sealed Power cam... 204/214 duration 420/443 lift on 112 lobe centers... a little smaller than yours, but no issues... works with stock engine components,... and sells for about $80.00-$90.00 new
Also.... works real well with a 600-800 over stock (or a 2000rpm) stall convertor.

I have an XE 268 in my 383, & its one noisey bastard;) Some of the noise could be due to the stiff valve springs.....my Edelbrocks are good to .575 lift out of the box, so they are no doubt runnin some healthey pressures over the nose even tho the cam is not quite .500 on the lift. I suspect that you have pretty stiff springs on your heads also! For a cam that runs quiet, & is fairly cheap as a kit, try a crane enegizer 278. I have run a couple of these over the yrs, & will say it has a nice lope in a 327 or 355.....not too wild tho, & the valvetrain runs nice & quiet! The cam specs @ .467 lift @ the valve, & .222 duration @ .050. Its ground on 110 sep angles, & makes good low/mid power.....good street cam, but does like a 3.73 gear:) L

You can't hear it from the outside with the hood closed.
But in the cab when you're driving it sounds like a sewing machine.

268 in a mild 327 LJ flat top engine. Motor hasn't been started yet but suspect I'll get that sweet bbrrrumpbbrrrumpbbrrrump :burnout: that we all love so dearly!

Sounds like my cam, except 420/442.

Comp Cam 280H. Haven't have any trouble out of it. Sounds good and runs good. But doesn't let the power hit until bout 2500. Then you feel it pull like a freight train.

When Ever You Change A Cam You Need To Install The Valve Spring Made For It Buy The Same People Who Make The Cam. Same Goes For Lifters, Pushrods & Timming Chain. Its A Combination Setup. If You Get One Of The Parts Wrong It Throws The Hole System Out.

Speedracer,
How do you like your 292 Magnum cam and what is your combo? I think that's what I'm going to run in a 383 with a BW ST-10 and 3:73 gears.

Everthing is matched. Comp cam, Comp lifters, Comp push rods and Trick
Flow Kenny Duttweiler heads. The seated spring pressure is about 120lbs so it should all be o.k. You know how your "ear" is. If you're tuned in to a certain noise that's all you hear. It runs like a bat outta hell and as long as I'm not messing anything up that's all that matters.

I have a 284 cam and a bigger stall that I'm considering putting in. However, I think I'm going to go with either a different Comp or a different brand altogether to avoid the noise.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Im still running the stock, tired, worn out cam in the original SBC.

But dont worry....once I get some free time Im gonna rip it out, throw it in my neighbors yard and install my roller 468FI/700R4.

Re: What SBC cams are people running??

I went with the comp cams 270H, with 64cc aluminum heads, and -5cc flat tops, for about 10:1 compression. I think the heads and the rest of your combo is more important to know before you just pick a cam that is inheritently quieter than another.

duration 204/214 lift 422/444 10 lobe center, I do not know what this info means other than this cams power band(correct term??) is 1800-2600 RPM's, should be about where Frank runs in drive around town and overdrive on the highway.

My Comp XE268 runs quiet but I run stock TRW lifters too.
I've ran a couple Comp HE268 cams in a 328 and a 350. For a DD I like the HE cam better than the XE.

Re: What SBC cams are people running??

Running a Comp Cams Roller cam #XR264HR and Comp Magnum roller rockers in a 383 stroker, 9.5 to 1 ratio motor. The cam is set at 107 degrees. It is tied through a 2400 stall converter / 700R4 tranny to a 3.73 Posi, 12 bolt rear end. Ever since I installed the stall converter, the truck pulls hard from 2000 to 4500 and sounds good. The heads are not aluminum, but are cast Dart II Sportsmen, connected to a dual 2 1/2" exhaust system with long tube headers and flowmasters.
