front brakes question?
i am going to be doing brakes on my 72 k10 for the first time
i will be replacing the rotors because they look to be original and never cut before but i do not know how to get them off?? i know i need to remove hub locks but when i do will they spring apart or will this all be a simple task? i will also be rattle canning all parts black again and the plastic lock outs blue again so any help would be great i remember seeing a couple of pics but can't find them now thanks for any help |
Re: front brakes question?
As I recall---you have to remove the lockout mech's then use this special big old socket made for chev 4x4. Once you remove the large nut, the hub basically falls out---got to remove the disc calipers first of course. Check with Jamie72 as he taught me everything I know on 4x4 and forgets more then I remember~~~ wait does that make sense?? While you are messing with this, might just throw on new calipers as they are cheap. When you bleed the system, you need to have that little pin on the proportioning valve with a clamp or something or you will never get the front brakes bleed properly~~learned that the hard way.

Re: front brakes question?
good time to replace lockouts ($50), bearings($20 wheel? or just repack 'em), and calipers ($35 ea. turn in your core though). When you pull the lockouts off you will need a set of ring pliers to remove the guts to the lockouts. Just remember the order that everything came off. Don't over/under torque the big nut mentioned previously.

Re: front brakes question?
When I did my brakes on my 75 K25, I had an issue with the rotor. It took me a while, but the rotor is "captured" - meaning you have to remove the lug studs to get the rotor seperated from the hub. Setting the bearing nut is pretty easy. Just spin the hub assembly as you tighten the nut. When the nut tightens to the point the hub stops spinning, loosen it a 1/16th - 1/8th of a turn & spin the hub again. Do this a couple times to set the bearings. then put it back together again. It's how I did mine & it's still rollin!
