Exhuast ?????
Hey Guys, I'm going to take my truck to get my exhuast done but I wanted to ask if it was a good idea to drive my truck 8 miles to get it done running straight headers. I know that it will be loud as hell but my concern would be is it engine safe or will it cause any harm to anything. Thanks you help would be appreciated.

That drive won't cause you any engine trouble.

Re: Exhuast ?????
Not to say it's a good idea, but a friend of mine ran open headers for a little over a week before he got his exhaust done.
He finally got a bad enough headache from the noise :D |
Re: Exhuast ?????
Running without exhaust doesn't hurt anything at all- it's shutting the engine off that creates the problems. My understanding is that the cool air cools the valves off too fast and cracks them. But I think that really becomes an issue when you're doing highway miles and high rpms for a long period of time. 8 miles shouldn't be a big deal.

Re: Exhuast ?????
Me being one so to speak or used to be any how. Circle track guys run open headers all the time. I ran open or at least very short pipes most of the seven years that I raced. Brad does have a point with the cold air though most circle track stuff goes on in the warmer weather. if you have a concern there just form some kind of temperary plug to put in the back of the header when you stop it will only need to be there for a short time. :metal:

Re: Exhuast ?????
22 years in the same muffler shop and i've had countless people drive their vehicles in with open headers without any problems. if you're concerned you can stuff a plug in the header outlet as soon as you shut it off---just be sure to tell the shop you put a plug in there.

Re: Exhuast ?????
I drove a car for over a year with nothing but a manifold. Road trips, cold ohio winter nights, summer time, rain, shine, never an issue... other than hearing loss.

Truword1 to exhaust shop owner... Hey, what's up with my truck. It started, wheezes a couple times, then died...   |
Re: Exhuast ?????
I never had a problem doing it. 8 miles is nothing with open headers. Just make sure you have an apointment with the shop and have there phone # in your pocket to hand the cop when you get pulled over. Atleast thats how it works in my town in Virginia.

Re: Exhuast ?????
Drove mine with open header to the muffler shop (about 5 miles) with no problems, just make sure that there is no wires or anything in the way of the heat

Re: Exhuast ?????
all my friends drive with dumps (inline 6 f150, 89 v6 camaro, 99 v8 ram, some year mazda 626) i think they all wanted to be like my loud truck with cut outs because it's so loud. it doesn't hurt anything but i wouldn't drive like that in cold or wet weather. cold air can rush up the pipe as mentioned and crack your exhaust valves, and also moisture can get in there and rust out your valves or your whole engine if you have real bad luck.

Re: Exhuast ?????
The last time I drove to the muffler shop with just open headers I bolted on the collector reducers before heading over. This seemed to reduce the noise by about 15-20%. However most everyone probably already does this anyway.

Re: Exhuast ?????
You should be fine, I ran my GMC off the manifolds with no trouble. Sounded damn good, too.
