broken rear dana 60

yesterday i was takin off and i reved up the motor pretty good and dumped the clutch and didnt have good results.. i gotta a chirp out of the tires and a snap ping from the rear axle and that was that. I think i snaped an axle shaft, but not quite sure yet, ill find out later today if the rain doesnt keep up. I put it in gear, let the clutch out and the drive shaft turns and i get a thunk....thunk....thunk....thunk.. from the rear axle on the driver side. and the truck does not move absolutely anywhere.. The rear is from a 72' c20 with leaf springs has 4.10 gears and a limited slip. Im running a mild cammed 454 bored 60 over, with a sm465 tranny and 35" mud terrain tires.. I was kinda surprised i broke it.

Rear Dana 60s have really weak axle shafts. They are about the same diameter as a Dana 44. The shafts in a corp. rear axle (HO52/72) are A LOT stronger.

If you're lucky its just an axle, and a new one will be about $150 and a used (probably wouldn't do that, as you just broke a used one) for like $50-75. I though Dana 60's where the $h!t? I guess stock anything will break if you push it hard enough. An axle swap is the first thing I do to any build up, because they are usually 30+years old and they weren't made with the intention of surviving 3-5k rpm clutch drops!

The driver side axle shaft got twisted clean off, right before the splines. I dont have pics yet, but i will soon. I havent looked into who sells new axle shafts for that axle yet, does anyone know off hand who does? I live in Southern California; 15 mins from downtown LA.

Buy good axles if you plan on doing that alot. D60's will hold alot of abuse if they have good parts or if your in situations were the wheels slip alot.

if the wheel would slip he wouldnt be breaking axles!

there is a standard TON of axle suppliers if you want to beef up. look in WWW.pirate4x4.com/forum in the vendor section

i guess you can have some good axle shafts made through off road design.. i just thought that it would just spin the tires and not be able to gain enough traction to break it, especially since its a pickup and there isnt very much weight on it. but i guess thats not the case.. im just gonna replace the shaft with a stocker and eventually swap in a 14 bolt..

14 bolts are a dime a dozen, dump the dana 60 quick since you're running tires bigger than stock. i run 14 bolts in both my 72s--much stronger .

I was running a 14 bolt in my old truck. Bulletproof... Held up good with a 425hp 383 stroker, built 700R4 & 4.10's/powertrax locker.
