Okay so Im looking for the best setup for my 70 Shortbed... I have a 3 speed manual, 350 motor. What is going to be the best setup for SOUND, performance and gas mileage. H pattern, X pattern, 40 series flows?, glass packs? Turn downs, straight out the back, Pipe size???? Help!

That is very personal. I never run over 2.5" pipe and I hate the sound of Flowmasters. I'm sure there are a number of people on here that LOVE Flowmasters and run 3" pipe.

It comes down to what do YOU like for sound?

You! are the only one who knows.Everyone has preferences(I like Redheads).You will need to determine exactly what sound you want.There is a search feature on the page at the top.Use it to find exhaust threads,some have links to sites with audio clips.I personally like full length systems with a fair amount of rumble.I dislike the side exhaust because they seem to split the exhaust note.Almost everyone on this site has an exhaust system and most like the flows in one series or another.There are more economical mufflers out there and some of those same threads will have links or other info on them.Good luck getting the sound you want.

Here we go.....This is going to be a LONG LONG post.

But he is right, it is a personal choice to some extent. If it were me, and I think most would agree, I would put an exhaust system together with performance in mind first and asthetics second.

You have to ask yourself several questions first.

1. Is the motor stock?

2. How loud to you want it?

3. How much money do you want to spend?

If it's stock, run it how you want the exit to go but kit it at 2.25" diameter.
As far as a muffler, there are a ton of options that flow well. It's really up to the tone you want and how loud. You can buy a set of headers for $99 at Pep Boys or spend $500 on some Doug Thorley's nickle plated headers.

Me personally, I've got Hedman Elite mid length headers with ball joint collectors and a 3/8" flange. They're also HTC coated. I run 2 1/2" aluminized straight out the back with an "H" pipe and 50 series Flowmasters.

Im looking for a nice sounding muffler that sounds like a muscle car at idle, and roars when you rev it. Its mainly a stock motor. I had 40 series in an H pattern on my old truck and it sounded great but would want something louder.

40's are about as loud as FM's get. In that case, I'd go with some Dynomax Bullets. They are very loud and sound great. I had some on my truck for a little while. They're also pretty cheap. If you run them all the way out the back they will be more pingy. If you dump em or run em' in front of the tires they will be more deap and throaty. Personally I also like exhaust all the way out the back. Just my preference though....

Are you running headers? That will also make a pretty fair difference on the sound.

Headers and 40's with 2.5" would be fairly loud. My 70 p/u (low buck truck build) has cheap headers and some kind of flowmasters on it right no w/o a cross over tube of any kind and it dumps out right under the cab. I HATE IT!! It is way to loud and w/o a cross over it sounds like it is mis-firing when it is just bouncing that split sound all under my truck. It is going to get stock manifolds with 30's and 2.5" all the way out the back:)

My 71 SWB (project slow build) has Sandersons 3/4 length headers and will be getting 2.5" and 30's also all the way out the back. I used to like real loud exhaust systems untill I found out it really does not make you fast, just Deff (sp?).

Now our 67 SS396 Chevelle has full length JBA's with 3" pipe and 30's and sounds great at idle, loud when wide open:metal: but you can still talk to the person next to you when just driving around.

my truck has the stock 350 with ramhorn manifolds and it has about 2-2.25in pipe i havnt measured it but it goes into 26in glasspacks the sit right under the cab centered in the door and dumpes out right at the back of the cab and at idle its not loud at all but you can hear it and normal driving it sounds good and you can hear the radio or passenger fine and when i whomp on it its louder than the 90s trucks with just mufflers around here nad louder than those damn ricers to but it all comes down to your preference

327 with hookers feeding 2.5 flowmaster 40's I think it sounds pretty damn good. It is seriously loud if thats what your going for not really the low deep rumble.

i got 350 with headers (i dunno the make got em for free) dualed from the headers with 2.5 pipe and the mufflers are bottles, it has a nice sorta rough deep mean idle sound then u pin it and it has a very nice almost straight pipe sound to it (makes ur ears ring wen ur behind it) for some reason it likes to back fire wen its warm idling down sounds nice tho like its a standard

I got a SBC 283 with rams horn manifolds going to 2.25" true dual exhaust pipes and Magnaflow mufflers. From there it goes straight out the back end followed by a pair of SS 3.5" Magnaflow tips. It has that low deep muscle car rumble at idle and gets fairly loud at WOT, sometimes you'd swear there was a lot bigger engine under the hood. Personally I like Flowmasters too, I just wanted something different and am happy with my choice.

My 85 has a stock 350, Flowtech after-burner headers, 2.25" pipe, glass-packs (I can't remember how long, maybe 18"), & it all runs out the back thru 4"x24" tips

Oh, and it's a true dual setup (no crossover pipe)

It's nowhere near loud enough for me

I haven't decided for sure, but I'm prolly gonna run 3" with flows, spintechs, or somethin on my 67

Whatever I run it's gonna be loud :metal: :crazy:

I've got one side of the exhaust done on my GMC. (haven't got the other header pipe done eyt) It's got 2'' pipes with a 18" Red-Hot glasspack, dumping out before the rear axle. It sounds good. It seems to have a pretty sweet, deep tone to it, but I can't tell for sure since the other side it right off the manifold and it really loud and poppy. I'm gonna get a couple of 3 1/2'' tips and run it out before the rear wheels at a 45* angle. It should sound good when its all done.
