Front Air Dam Question
 

IVE NOTICED AIR DAMS ON SOME OF THE TRUCKS IN THIS FORUM, BUT IVE NEVER SEEN ONE IN PERSON. IHAVE A 5.5 DROP IN FRONT WITH A CHROME BUMPER. WHAT DO YALL THINK ? IMPROVE LOOK OF FRONT END OR NOT
& where can you get them
& do they make these with the road lights

if your talking about that peice of plastic under the bumper you can get it at lmc.com or yearone.com those the only two i use dont know of anothers. But i dont think iv seen them with lights in them tho. Cool idea if no one has made them yet

i HAD one on my truck. i say had because the truck slid in the ice one time and went straight into a residential curb.

the air dam was all but destroyed with that incident. I need to order another one sometime.

with a 5.5" drop it will be pretty damn close to the ground, so you'll just have to be careful.

I have one installed... and I say they improve the look. It makes the truck appear lower... you will need to be cautious when pulling into stalls (I rub). If you install the lights... they may break easily if you hit the "cement stop".

I am not sure the air dam would be sturdy enough to hold a light. I don't mean they will break it or anything like that. I think that the weight of the light might make it jiggle around while driving.
If you could mount it off the bumper but show through a hole in the dam that might work better.

Okay there is the factory style seen on cclassic 87's truck and there are fiberglass after market "body kit " type ones. the body kit ones can have lights mounted in them but on bostruction and they are done. The factory style ones are flexible plastic so they will not break as easy. however after a while they will crack. mine is cracked on the conner due to some stress cuase by a previous owner. I like the look of the factory ones alot. and a light could be mounted to the bumper and a hole cut or the light could be mounted infront of it. here are two pics i have. The tan truck was an 85 and its air damm is dirrent then the black trucks which is a 84. neather truck i lowered.

I think they complete the front of the truck...esp. on the 81-87 models. Seen a few with holes cut and retangle lights in them also.

The plastic air dams seem to finish the look of a truck , but there are other reasons to have them. #1 would be that they help to get cool air to the radiator, that is important. #2 would be that they also help to create a negative pressure under the truck, which does two things--help to remove air from the engine compartment, thus helping to cool the engine and with the negative air pressure underneath the truck it assists in fuel economy and performance. Granted it is not much, but NASCAR likes things like this and they do work. You ought to see the vacuum I stir up on the highway when I am running at 75 MPH.

I use the plastic cheapo air dams rather than an expensive fiberglass one, because of the fact that I can replace it with little investment, if I damage it.

Thanks for your responses.One of the posts said to check with lmc or year 1. also I was told stylin concepts has them . Also what is difference between factory style & aftermarket .

I got mine from my local dealer for about $40. I am running a 4WD version on my 2WD because they hang a couple of inches lower. Probably much too low for your truck. :)

I remember seeing a "front spoiler" I guess is what you call it, on an 80's chevy. It was a red one with flag graphics on the sides. I have the magazine at home and it is about 4 years back.

This one went under the front bumper but extended all the way to where the front wheel well starts. It DID have headlights and it looked badass!

If I can find the magazine this weekend, I'll try to scan a picture and post it up.

cool. the only possible diffrance i can see is the fit. Maybe even the material quality. maybe not. I have never really compaired them I was suprised that my 85 and my 84 had diffrent air dams. Both of which are factory

I replaced the one on my 86 K10, from cross-canada, for around $36 canadian, shipped to the shop, through a jobber...

The previous one was all cracked, and broken.....it's a stock replacement, and looks, and is the same quality as the original

From the dead.
I bought one off a 2wd '88 Suburban yesterday. It is about 4" tall in the center.
The one mounted on the BLazer came on my '86 4x4 GMC 1/2 ton. It is about 5" tall in the center. Took it off the 4x4 because I put a set of tow hooks on. Will buy a new one for the hooks eventually.

I'm on my 6th one :D
6" drop in the front on mine, they've got a limited life. I agree with the others though, it cleans up the front.
