Exhaust Idea
 

I know we sometimes discuss exhaust ideas on here. I seen this setup on a S10 forum. I figured it would work for our trucks as well. I have no need for cat converters, but some of you might. Depending on the type of muffler it will be kinda noisy in the cab using this setup. If you can't stand the cab drone with chambered mufflers dumped at the axles, then you can go with Magnaflows(straight through). I just had a true dual exhaust installed on my lwb. It consist of Hooker long tubes, 2.25 pipe dumped at the axles. Absolutely no cab drone and they are really quiet until you REALLY get into the throttle. They seem like the ideal muffler when you have a family member or friend who's not into screaming over the exhaust along for the ride. I have flowmaster 40's dumped on my swb and I love them. Long story short here are the pics.

What is so different? Have cats never been installed standing on their side?
I could see where it might be problematic in breaking the honeycomb after years of use, but seem like a good spacesaver to me. I have 2 turbo style mufflers mounted like that on my 98.

Well it's different to me. I don't own anything newer than 85. I usually see the basic setup with long tubes, two seperate pipes, and mufflers out the rear or dumped. You said you have two turbo mufflers mounted this style, but if you noticed this setup uses dual cats into a single muffler with dual inlet and outlets. This is the first time I've seen a dual inlet and outlet muffler installed. I like the space saving technique. I was just posting pics of a different than normal exhaust setup.

Defiantly different. Thanks for the pictures. I wont ever have to worry about cats but still something to remember.

will having both pipes run through one muffler like that mess it up? I know stock vehicles have one muffler, but they normally Y at the front and flow into one pipe... how would two different pipes flowing into onw muffler react? just curious

In doing a little searching in my Jegs Catalog I noticed that Magnaflow and Flowmaster have dual in and out mufflers. I doubt that it hurts. I guess they were thinking of a way to conserve space. I would love to hear how the setup sounds(Flowmasters). I suppose the cats will quiet it down some than if no cat were used.

2 in 2 out is pretty common nowdays. Mid 90's and newer had 2 in 1 out from factory and that is the replacement when not doing a full exhaust setup. I have the factory true dual on my 98 that dumped into 1 muffler with 1 exit. I put the 2 turbos in on their side like that so it would save space and be tucked up under the truck more, both have turndowns from the muffler. It works great, was easy to mount and sounds good.

neat i have never seen that before. By the way how do you like the hooker long tubes 84? On my set up i have cats but it is still pretty loud. they are coming off this summer though. My cab drone is horrible now so why not make it worse?

Well the Hookers are bigger than headers I'm use to installing. I'll have to get a mini starter for better clearance. The last bolt hole next to fire wall on the driver side was a "pita". I had to ground down a cheap 7/16 wrench to get it tightened. I was quoted a price of $189 for the starter, so I suppose I won't be purchasing Hookers for passenger vehicles in the future. Reducers are not included in the Hooker box. You have to purchase them seperately. This adds to the cost of $171 already spent. Magnaflows were on the truck when I purchased it. I added 2.25 pipe dumped at the axle($125).They are really quiet like turbos. 84 400 if you are tired of cab drone then get a set of Magnaflows. They are a straight through design. I've read that they flow better than Flowmasters. I'm sure thats on the dyno. I don't mind them being quiet, because my father who's 87 rides with me sometimes. He doesn't need to experience the cab drone. In all it is a learning experience.

exhaust is done that way on most trucks now that have a fuel tank inside the frame rail so the drivers side exhaust doesnt hang too low. theres not really any benefit to running it that way its simply the only way to run duals on a lot of the newer stuff. those mufflers are fairly common as well

Thanks 84. I love the rumble though and once i get rid of the cat they are sure to get lowder. ahh well. Yeah the hookers do neeed the mini starteer i forgot that. Mine does not have a mini and it is a PITA to start after driving for a while cause the headers heat up the starter.
