Steering column rebuild
Does anybody have information on what is required to completely rebuild a steering column?
I remember somebody (Longhorn Man maybe?) posted an exploded view of a column, a while back, but can't seem to find it. Basically, I'm picking up an old column tomorrow, and would like to replace all the bearings, and whatever else should be replaced, while it's out. Thanks :) |

I saved these from the board, although I didn't save the link to the thread. If it is tilt, like I am doing, this should help you.

Re: Steering column rebuild
WOW!
that's alot of parts... The column i just picked up is not a tilt unit, so i'm guessing alot of that diagram will not be used, but most will be helpful. Now that i see what's involved i may just say screw it, as this is just a column to hold me over until i can justify spending the big bucks for an aftermarket unit. Thanks for the info, I've saved the diagram for my archives, and if somebody has the same breakdown for a non tilt unit, i wouldn't mind having a copy of that too. :) |
Re: Steering column rebuild
i just replaced the turn signal switch on my 1970 c10. in the process, i used an air ratchet to re attach the steering wheel, and tore up the threads on the steering shaft. this is the origonal non tilt column, and i wouldnt mind just replacing the entire column if i have destroyed it. any advice??
i really want to know where everyone is getting the aftermarket ccolumns. or. would a column from another (more modern) chevy truck fit???? please help! |
Re: Steering column rebuild
Sorry, i missed this...
If you're still looking, watch the classifieds, tilt columns pop up all the time. Chevy used a similar tilt column in the vans, up into the early 80's and they work great. Otherwise you can always check out Flaming River, or Ididit, for an aftermarket column but that will end up costing a few bucks. hope that helps :) |
Re: Steering column rebuild
I am in the process of rebuiling a tilt. It is not that difficult if you pay close attention to the dissasembly. I tried to attach written instructions, but can't for some reson, maybe thefile is to big. PM me your email and I will send them to you. David

Re: Steering column rebuild
Just put a CPP linkage on to a 6L80 trans. I had "slop" in the shift lever and would like to know if you or anyone has a remedy for it. I can feel the endents and can adjust linkage to put the indicator on "Park", but there is still slop with the lever.
