Need Steering Gear Box Parts
 

I took my manual gear box off yesterday so I could torch off the adjuster lock nut...too rusty to use a wrench. Decided to clean it up while it was off...found that the bearing in the very end (towards the bumper) is shot? Anyone know of a source where I can get this ball bearing? How about torque specs for reassembly?

Are there any parts suppliers out there that deal more with GMC trucks like my '63 3/4 ton then LMC? Their S&H charges are getting to me....and they don't have a lot of the parts I need.

I'm not really interested in "upgrading" this truck. Just more expense and things to fix down the road. Besides...figuring out P/S brackets for the original 305 might be an adventure. This is a low buck hauler I want to use to bring home other projects. I only know of one of these trucks in a local yard...I'll get the gearbox if I have to. But if it is going to cost me $50 or so for another used gearbox I'd rather spend $30 or so and have one that is rebuilt.

Any sources?

30 bucks for a rebuilt, sounds like the way to go if you want to keep the stockbox.

I can't help you with the bearing or torque specs. But if you can't find another manual box locally, let me know, I have a few. I'd let you have one REAL reasonable.

I'm just guessing it'll cost $30 but I bet that is close. I spent about $15 on new grade 8 mounting bolts/nuts/washers and an adapter and grease zerk to replace the factory plug with in the top. The pitman arm seal is available from Napa for $6 and I bought the plug that goes in the end for .38 from them. Only thing that is left is that bearing...I'm going to reuse the bushings since they don't look that bad (compared to the truck at least). The input seal is shot but I'm just going to keep grease pumped in it...being a manual box it shouldn't leak out much. This whole truck is a POS I drug out of a pasture for $50. Every body panel except the hood has large rust holes.

Any chance you'd be willing to disassemble one of the boxes and just send me a bearing? If you unscrew the back plug (the one where the rag joint attaches) there is a bearing right inside that will slip off. I need that bearing and the race...could send the entire plug if you don't want to knock the bearing out. Let me know what you'd want for it...either the bearing or the entire box. I've got another place to try locally but so far no luck.
