trying to teach myself....
how to adjust the carb on my truck. Is there any easy straight forward way to tell me an easy way to do this. Truck runs like crap spits and sputters when i get on it, backfires and whatnot. Any help would be great. Or any one close by that would do it for a steak dinner.

Re: trying to teach myself....
what carb do you have?? the stock quadrajet? if so with the truck off turn the idle mix screws all the way in clock wise then back them out about 3 1/2-4 turns then with the truck fully warmed up adjust them till the truck runs right, and also when i tune mine i play with the idle screw and the screw for the choke if needed, i hope that helps any, if not someone will give you better info im sure

If you have an Edelbrock Performer, check out http://www.telusplanet.net/public/gi...delbrock_1.htm
Edelbrock's own site can be helpful, too. http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/index.shtml They even have some videos that were helpful. |

Re: trying to teach myself....
Hey Dad. You didn't mention it but we'll assume the ignition system is fresh or in good shape? You won't be able to get it to run right if the ignition is weak as in old plug wires, corroded terminals in dist cap and fouled up spark plugs, vacumn advance and centrifugal advance or base timing is off. I always make sure the base timing is right, advance right then move on to the carb last to fine tune it. I also use a vacumn gauge to set the idle mixture screws.

Re: trying to teach myself....
I am betting that it is an Edelbrock carb ---since it was bought at O'Reilly's. They usually have the Edels on the shelf. Just a question from the back seat, here. What is your timing set at? You mentioned coughing, sputtering, and back firing; Maybe we should get the basics set first. The carb should be the easiest part of this situation.
