67-72 Dealer Promo Trucks:1/24 Scale
There was a thread started on one on Ebay, so it got moved from here (not that it was intended as a heads-up for buyers). From the surprise shown at the value of this beauty it`s obvious not many are aware of these things' existence.
How many collect these here? Do most know about them? They have got to be the single most cool collectible pieces related to these trucks. They were "give aways" available only from the dealer`s showroom floors. They were made by the model kit companies, either MPC or AMT. They were molded in actual factory colors and were longbed Fleetside loaded trucks. Promos had been made since the mid to late`50s in plastic and there were trucks as well as select cars. Into the late`70s they were not as common. But, the last El Caminos were produced and other hit or miss models. Camaros and Vettes were most consistent. As they had all but faded away, they had a comeback in the late`80s/early`90s. The`92 SS454 was a popular one (Onyx Sport actually). Even by the`90s these were still relatively cheap @ around $15 and still available exclusively through dealers. Who`s got some? |

It is Ochre, 71 on right.Yes it is the green on left 69. they go from 67 on top to the 72's on bottom, 2 of each. That is all that I have ever seen and that I can find info on.

Re: 67-72 Dealer Promo Trucks:1/24 Scale
I've seen the 69-72 versions at Carlilse and other swaps but never seen a 67 or 68 truck... Could someone post a closeup pic of the grille for a 67 or 68 promo...
Don't have any pics but I have a 54 Buick Skylark promo & a 54 Buick sedan promo. A 50 Chevy Fleetline promo. 49 Ford promo. 51 Dodge promo, 60 Buick promo and a 64 Ford promo. All packed away. |
Re: 67-72 Dealer Promo Trucks:1/24 Scale
My dad and I collected a bunch of Corvette Promo cars when I was growing up. I've got 25th anniversery 78's, paces cars from 78 and 86, 82 Collectors edition, 35th and 40th anniversery vettes and each year ZR1 made. Plus a couple of El Caminos and a couple of later year trucks and Indy Berreta pace cars. I think I got a 3rd gen Camaro pace car too. Need to inventory them!
Promo's in good shape can bring top dollar when sold. But that also means they can be expensive to buy when looking for them. The older they are the more they can be worth given the condition, with or without the box and so on. Only problem is the older models had less detail or just were very poor representations of the actual car. I'm talking about the early 60's and 50's stuff though. By the 70's GM started using toy companies to produce them. Ertl being the one label I see most on the GM stuff. |

I've seen them on ebay and they usually sell for at least$100 and go up from there.

Re: 67-72 Dealer Promo Trucks:1/24 Scale
I have been trying to figure out what color promos were made each year. So far, this is what I have come up with:
1967. White and Dark Red. 1968. Light Blue and Yellow. 1969. Red and Light Green. 1970. Hugger Orange and Yellow. 1971. Ochre and Yellow (actually it seems to be Grapefruit). 1972. Medium Blue and Red. Has anyone seem any other colors? |

Funny. I was just pondering the same question Bob asked, curious if there ever were more than the 12 I knew of, and this old thread I started in '07 was the best info I could find in my searches. |
