Would you do it?

OK, I have a chance to get another Blazer, but I am not sure what it worth the price that the guy is asking. It is a 1972 with a 4-6 inch lift running 36 inch Buckshots on later model factory rally wheels . The thing has been repainted with what I would call a fair job maybe a couple of years ago. There is very little rust in the vehicle. The floor has three pea sized holes on the passengers side and no rust in the rockers or rocker boxes. The windshield frame has a small bubble under the paint at the seam, but it looks good otherwise. The drivers side door also has a rust bubble, but that is all the rust we could find. There is no body filler that we could find or any quarter panels that have been replaced. The body rubber mounts have been replaced as well as the front an rear bumpers. The front grill looks better then many that I have looked at and the whole inside of the floor is straight with a coating of what looks to be POR-15. It was a factory 4 speed truck, but now has a Turbo 350 in it with junk floor shifter. The engine is a 454 that needs a tune up, but has a new Eldelbrok carb on it and an Accel HEI unit. It has a set of Hedman headers with a duel full length Flowmaster exhaust. The front seats need help, but the rear is almost perfect. The hardtop is in pretty good shape and the hatch looks good from what I can see, but I can't open it right now. The radio is gone and the hole has been cut out for a newer style type. The only other thing wrong that I can find is that the turn signals do not work, and there is some wiring that looks like someone has changed. The dash panel has been redone, but, I may replace it later. I wish I had some pictures to show you, but I forgot my memory card in my camera. The asking price is $4500 firm as is, or $4000 with out the motor, so what do you think?

Although it sounds pretty good, I think that pics are a must to make a good determination...sorry, I'm no help. :b69:

A picture is worth alot, scroll down and look at the $3000 deal a few threads down ;)

It's strange how the price would drop only 500 for no motor. I agree about the pics, however, from what you've said I say NO DEAL!

Let's face it, that $3000 deal is a once in a life time thing. The sad fact is I live 45 miles from where that Blazer was and missed it. I even showed the pictures to my wife the first day it was listed, but she did not like the color, so I passed on even looking at it. :(

I am just wondering what makes this a "NO DEAL" for you? Thanks for the honesty though.

Just a sidebar, I do have a friend who said he would buy the 454 for more then $500 and I have most of the stuff to put my 99 5.7 Vortec motor in with a carb. I am just looking at my options right now. I will try to get some pictures tomorrow if I can.

If you can afford it and want it, then sure it's worth it.

Sounds to be in 'decent' shape, alot depends on the hopes you have for it though.

If you have the cash, buy it.

Leave the motor in it, having a non running hulk around only spells junk to the neighbors.

I agree with VT...and you, and your wife of course, are the only opinions that really matter.
You'll have the best idea of it's value by getting upclose and personal with it.
Good luck!

I am not much with body work, so the less rust the better! (obviously) I think that any running motor is worth more than $500. Especially a bigblock. The main thing to think about is all of the brackets and pulleys and what not that you have to come up with to get an engine road worthy. You mentioned you might have another motor laying around so that definelty helps. If the top and hatch are good, that is a big plus. If I wanted to buy it without the motor, I would definently try to get it for less than what the guys asking. As far as the complete price of $4500, it might be worth that. Just some of my thoughts.

I just don't like that fact that the guy would only drop 500 for a motorless truck and even with motor I still think it's too much but then again it's hard to say without pics. I might see a few pics and change my mind (hint, hint)

Maybe, but I see good deals out your way all of the time, some more than
others are junk, but some are not, unless your just itching for it I'd pass ;)

Re: Would you do it?

If you buy it, change out that solid mount fan to a clutch fan. :barf:

There's some impending rust but I bet you'd get a couple years as a DD out of it.

Those steps will give you grief down the road too, plus they'll catch everything when you take it out wheelin'. :hm:

Re: Would you do it?

Rust in the top windsield frame is not a good sign and that may be overpriced if you have to do some chopping and cutting to fix.

Re: Would you do it?

Can't really tell from the picture but it looks like bubbles in the paint on the leading edge of the rear quarter-next to the door. That is the "B" pillar which is one of the most notorious and difficult pieces to rust on Blazers. The windshield frame is telling you there is rust happening and with the lower door bubbles, you can bet that the rear bed floor above the rear bed support is either rusting or thinking about it pretty good. At $4500, I'm not personally excited considering the 454 in there needing a "Tune up"! A running 454 will bring $500.+ in any market so that is a simple issue. But, rusting Blazers are a pita to stop ~~~I wonder why the rear floor was coated with POR15? Be caucious here as avoiding rust is a lot easier then repairing and stopping it once well under way.
Why do you want this---would would you like to use it for---if you have $4500. in your pocket, could you find a better one ie. more original with maybe less issues to deal with???
Not trying to break your bubble but~~~sometimes in the excitement of the chase, a fish will strike a bait that under normal circumstances---he would see it is not a little fish but a big metal lure tied with a knot to a long strong line that will jerk his jaw awful hard and if not careful--he could wind up being someone's dinner!! heheheh

Even so, Huck's making a valid point.

The reason I want this one is because it miles ahead of the one that I have now ( see the pictures below to see what I mean) The reason I asked here is because I did not want to be someones dinner AGAIN. The Blazer I have now was bought last year after looking for 6 months. It was the best one for the money I thought, but I was unaware of the windshield problems at the time. It has been 20 year since I owned a Blazer before that and it was not a problem back then. What really gets me is that the guy I bought it from passed himself off as honest family man, but failed to let me know about the frame problem. It was obvious that he had checked it out because I could tell where he had pulled down the rubber around the window to look at it. My thought was that I would be money ahead by not having to deal with as much rust, plus this one had some things on it that I wanted already on it.
