exhaust snapping

I would like to know if any of you have ever had a truck that was straight piped. Different states have different laws so some of u push the envelope and some don't. I was just curious what the best setup would be to get it so my exhaust snaps. I prefer that than the rumble. Different strokes for different folks. The 87 i have that im sfbd had 2 inch straight pipe and it snapped pretty good. In the states you may have different muffler makes but i thought a shorter bottle would help the snap, maybe a 12" bottle and put it on backwwards they say. Any ideas. The smaller the diameter the better it will rap i assume

Headers will give you a little more treble in your exhaust sound versus stock iron manifolds. Iron manifolds really muffle the sound.

A pair of old blown out glasspacks will really give you the raspy sound your are looking for. Just get the cheapest ones you can find and make sure they aren't guaranteed against blowing out.

Drilling holes in your muffler will bring out the treble too.

I personally do not like a wide open exhaust, but this is what I have seen that creates a loud and raspy exhaust.

When I was younger and wanted it loud, I found that headers and glasspacks were the best. To get them really loud I would dump in some used oil to soak the fiberglass inside. Then when installed the heat would burn out the glass and would get extremely loud. Probally not the best idea in the world but it worked very well.

Headman Headers, 2.5 almost straight pipes running through a set of FlowMasters is pretty loud with what I refer to as keeping a good sounding exhaust note to it. I don't know if I would want to hear anymore then what I have right now. Seems to be a nice balance. Kinda like suttle touchs of chrome and paint or just chrome every thing in sight. Too much can defeat a good thing. (IMHO)

esll.

Hell, just run open headers :D Wait, that's not the greatest idea - throw some dumps right after the headers - that's what I have, headers with 12"-long 2.25"-dia turndowns, it's loud as hell, has plenty of raspiness, and sets off car alarms 3 parking spots away, lol :D

standard exhaust, with dual flow master 40 series that dump right as the bed starts....has an evil "throaty" sound...

Mine 86 is headers to flowmasters straight out the back through 3 inch pipes!
Very deep and loud.

I got stock manifolds and like 6 ft. of straight piped exhaust on my '79 and its deep and loud. The blown out glasspacks will give you a more raspy sound though.

i think he is wanting that "popcorn popper" sound. I had a freind with an 85 with 2.25 straight exhaust out the back. It had that snappy, pop sound to it. I really hated it, but like you said. Different strokes for different folks
